Leveling jacks height

Hello, we have a 31e motorhome. The leveling jacks seem very low, about 4-5 inches of clearance. They scrape constantly on speed bumps and approaches. We asked the dealer about it, as it was purchased new and under warranty. They agreed they were low but did not know how to remedy the situation. They contacted Thor. Thor sent a letter saying anything above 4 inches was fine. I go online to lippert installation instructions and they disagree. Lippert, the brand, says 8 inches minimum and uses a string test which these would not pass. What do we do?

I believe you need to go back to Thor armed with the info from Lippert. I know on mine there is plenty of clearance even with the snap pads installed. Jerry

I agree. Armed with that knowledge from Lippert; it'll be tough for them to ignore what you have to say.
Good Luck!

Armed with what Lippert says, hope you have it in writing, get copies of that to both your dealer and to Thor. In writing tell both the dealer and Thor, your expectation is that the jack installation will be corrected to meet manufactures specifications. Give them something like 30 days to respond to you with the correction plan and timeline. This all needs to be in writing for documentation, should you need it later.

Is this a common problem? I would think there would be others.

Thank you all for the advice! I will be calling and writing on Monday....

I recall this issue popping up in here before...

But I don't know how common it is.

Mine are lower than I think they could be. But I don't think they are much lower than other things like the generator exhaust pipe, waste tanks, etc. I need to get mine on some nice level concrete to check to make sure the crown in my driveway isn't fooling me.

You just need to find the right speed-bump; to let you know whether or not they're tucked up high enough...

I thought mine might be low because of another post I read on here so I measured them and they were 8 inches. Just like the Lippert manual says.

Glad to hear that yours are set up the way that they are supposed to be!

I have called. Sent photos. Included the Lippert installation guide showing 8 inch minimum clearance. Thor, specifically a guy named Brandon Tom, still says my 4.5 inch clearance is acceptable and that Thor will not reverse their decision on the issue. Any other suggestions? Desperate!

Thor's not the one that'll be fixing them: your dealer should be.
I'd take the info to them, and see what they say...
Good luck!

( I spoke with Brandon this morning, and he seems to be a pretty fair guy... )

The dealer says they can’t fix things without an authorization from Thor. The dealer is telling me to deal with Thor, that Thor will listen to the customer more than them.... Brandon Tom is the one who says things are ok with the jacks. I attached the letter. I am going to resubmit the claim but have no expectation of Thor responding differently.

Update: Thor has again denied the second claim stating the jacks are mounted correctly and meet standards

So if Thor ultimately doesn't pay for it: how much would your dealer charge you for raising them up?
They might be willing to cut you a break on it, since keeping customers happy is in their best interest.

The dealer has said there is nothing more they can (will) do. We have asked for everyones’s supervisor to call us, so we will see. I guess we post Brandon Tom’s email on all of the rv facebook groups we follow.....

Are there any independent shops around you that could do the job?

I’m not sure. I just hate to let Thor off the hook for an obvious design screw up. We asked Brandon Tom to provide the specs he has, which he says are from Lippert and state a 4.5 inch clearance. He refuses to provide them to us.

We also bought the extended warranty plan, so not sure if they might cover it? Probably excluded in the small print.....

I'd ask the company that is providing the warranty for a clarification...
It never hurts to find out!

Is there anyone, other than Brandon Tom at Thor, who thinks 4.5 inches of clearance is acceptable? Am I being unreasonable?
