Seiki TV

I am at an RV park and hooked up to cable and they are telling me that my Seiki TV cannot convert the signal into digital without a converter. Anyone know anything about this one?

Yep! The Seiki only supports an ATSC tuner. That works with Over The Air signals. Many cables use QAM tuning. There is a difference. You can go to your local Radio Shack and get a converter that supports both QAM and ATSC.

Unfortunately, without doing some in-wall rewiring, it means that you will have to run the cable line in a window to the converter and then feed HDMI output to your TV.

The other solution is to swap the TV(s) with ones that have QAM tuners.

Sieki tv in my outlaw does both atsc and ntsb (I think that's right) but not QAM. Basically that means you only receive the cable channels that are transmitted in analog. All my three tvs received channels that way but the one in the garage was so snowy, it was unwatchable. The one in the front was semi watchable. I have ordered a QAM to HDMI box. I will hook it up in series with the TV. Hope it will work!

Seiki

I replaced the bedroom and outside tv's with smart tv's for that reason. One tv left to replace. BTW I saw 32" Seiki tv's in HH Gergg for 119.00.

OK! To straighten it out..
There's no such standard as NTSB. NTSC was the analog standard that is no longer used.
The ATSC standard is digital, not analog. It is what local stations use for over-the-air digital transmission. Some cable companies also encode with ATSC.
QAM is another digital transmission technology that some cable companies use.

Do you have an antenna booster, if so try turning it off, worked on mine.

I do plan on replacing all three of my tv's in the near future. Thor must have gotten a really good deal on Seiki to buy such a POS!!! You can buy a Samsung or Visio for the same price at Best Buy.

Why smart tv? Do you use any of the smart stuff?

The best way to fix the Seiki TV is do the following:

1. Get a screw driver from your toolbox.
2. Remove it from the mount.
3. Sell is on Craigslist or throw it away in the trash.
4. Replace with almost any other LED TV.

*Here are the televisions that are likely not to have QAM tuners:
Apex
Dynex
Element
Haier
Seiki
Sylvania

I plan on attending the RV supershow in Tampa in January. I hope to run into a Thor rep and ask them why they insist on putting cheap junk products into their motorhomes ( TV"s and radio's ) I'm sure their customers would gladly pay $500 more for a 70k motorhome with better electronics. I know I would. Sometimes I just have no words.

Another "quick fix" is to buy an external Digital Tuner box that supports QAM. I found one with HDMI output.

You know, I'm struggling to figure out why there's such an issue with these TVs. We have a Seiki in the bedroom and have been able to use it with any cable system we've hooked up to. However, before we took possession of the rig we had the dealer set up a second, external coaxial input so the TVs could have their own dedicated satellite receiver. When we don't use our DirecTV setup and use the campground's, we run one coax from the pedestal to a splitter, then separate coaxes into the rig. It's worked every single time.

Are we just the exception to the rule? Or did our up-front work of making the dealer run separate lines to each TV solve our problem?

Not to get in any arguments, but some cable company's still transmit the old ntsc (yea I misspelled it in previous post) along with a digital signal to satisfy older sets.

Off that subject, techno post is probably the way to go. Who has followed his advice, and what tv did you replace with? And are you happy with it?

Kev.

I have never stayed at an RV park that has sufficient bandwidth to allow watching Netflix, etc. In addition, most RV parks expressly forbid streaming. It is there for email and low bandwidth purposes.

The post about dumping the Sucky tv's is correct. They are more trouble than they are worth. When the warranty.runs out I am donating mine to the dumpster. Plan on putting in lg,samsung or vizio whichever is on sale at the time.

One can pick up a reasonable TV at Best Buy for $170. What I do is check their sales and then download the manual to make sure the TV supports both ATSC and QAM.

Some Seiko's have a QAM capable tuner, many do not. We have 2 Seiko's in our 2015 Vegas and one Sankyo in the bedroom. The Sankyo has a QAM tuner and decodes cable everywhere. The Seikis do not decode QAM signals (like at Fort Wilderness). They have worked on cable systems at Hershey Park Campgrounds and at every military FAMCAMP where we have stayed.

Ed,
You are correct. One can buy a Seiki that has a QAM tuner. But I am not impressed with the TV. So I would rather have a LG or Vizio.

Funny never had a problem where I go. Then don't buy a smart tv.
