I was typing up the reason airplanes, race cars and even some heavy equipment go to great expanse to use nitrogen in their tires. Its because they know its a benefit. It may not be a benefit to RVers or even the family car buts thats all up to you.

After I read a couple of your responses I decided I didn't care to go to the effort.

The reason nitrogen (N) is used in tires is because it is dry (no water vapor). Nitrogen and oxygen are side by side in the periodic table so their atomic weights and sizes are nearly the same. Since both nitrogen and oxygen in tires are found as gaseous molecules of N2 and O2, the size of the N2 molecule is 300 pm (picometer) and the O2 molecule is 292 pm, the size difference is about 3%



Compressed nitrogen is a by product of producing liquid oxygen, so it is readily available. The expansion rate for water vapor is about 0.8 times per 10 degrees C. The expansion rate for nitrogen gas is 0.1 times per 10 degrees C.
So dry air is just a good as dry nitrogen for most tires.

Run of the mill atmospheric air has a little over 78% nitrogen in it, so pure nitrogen in your tires is not really that much of a change. Nitrogen molecules are somewhat larger than oxygen, so it tends to seep out less and more slowly.

So if I keep using my "nitrogen light" mixture, and pump the tires up to 100 psi: does that mean that they shouldn't leak down past 78 psi?

If oxygen did leak out of tires faster than nitrogen, there would be more nitrogen left inside tire when air was added again, so over time the concentration of nitrogen would go up normally anyway. Besides, if I’m already getting close to 100,000 miles from tires, how much can pure nitrogen help? Is nitrogen going to make my tires last over 10 years? Not sure it buys me anything even if claims are true.

Yeah. Moisture is my only real concern, particularly is humid weather “and” when a portable compressor is used connected directly to tire.

With larger compressors it’s not unusual to get water in tanks that has to be drained, and even then air should go through a dryer. With portable compressors the hot humid compressed air goes directly into tires, and when air cools inside tire condensation can form.

That was my next observation: Can I use the tire carcass as a filter, and use it to get rid of the unwanted oxygen?
