I just linked my android to the axxera radio two days ago. No cable required. With the phone in bluetooth mode, it simply found the radio. When asked for pass code, '0000' was entered and the phone responded with the model number of the radio. Simple as that.

Yes you can link without the cable, but that only gives you phone functions. If you want the dual mirroring, which will replicate the phones screen on the radio display, you will need the split cable. Advantage I see is ability to bring up navigation on your phone and have the display on your dash radio display.
