Atwood LP Gas Hot Water Heater Issue

I have a 2018 Thor Motorcoach 26HE motorhome. We've been running the lp hot water heater, but last night it quit lighting.

My hot water heater is an Atwood LP Gas unit. The manual says it might be between 4-10 gallongs.

It seems to try a few times and then the light stays on. Our furnace and stove are working fine.

I had my wife flip the switch while I lit it with a lighter outside. It will light, but shuts down after a few seconds.

I don't appear to be getting any spark from the electronic ignitor. It also looks like there are two small lights where the ignitor plugs into the elctronics and neither is lit or lights up when the inside switch is flipped.

Any thoughts? I've attached a pic. at least I've tried to.

Thanks,

Brian

First of all, it's a water heater, not a hot water heater (if the water was hot it wouldn't need heating).

I had a similar issue with my Atwood water heater a few months ago except mine would light for about 30 seconds and then shut off. After 3 cycles of this it would quit trying and light the "Pilot out light" which is just an error light now-a-days.

Realize that the ignitor is also the flame sensor: so if it does not sense and report the flame to the controller within 30 seconds of the gas valve opening, the controller will close the gas valve and recycle for another try.

I replaced several parts including the ignitor but the problem was actually the controller board; a known weak issue in these water heaters. I replaced mine with a Dinosaur board and hot showers abound again.

OUCH! But you're right about the name. Someone else said that it sounds like the control board. Is this something that installs easily?

Thanks so much for your thoughts.

Yeah, piece of cake to replace. Instructions come with the Dinosaur board as well.

I have a 2017 Miramar and had to have the control board replaced after about 18 months. Dealer replaced it under warranty, said it had a 2 year warranty.

On my Axis Thor installed the control board on the floor of the compartment and did not put any seal on the bottom corner of the cover. So ... water got in, destroyed the board and water got into the exhaust of the heater rusting it out. $1000 later I got I fixed. It was under warranty, but Atwood said it was an installation issue and Thor wouldnít stand behind it. Atwood put out a new board holder to get it off the floor.
