Auto Sock instead of chains?
Has anyone tried these fabric slip on devices used get traction on snow? What was your experience with them, do they work as advertised? Chains on my dual wheels look like they may not the necessary clearance and I have been looking for an alternative.

The Auto-Socks are approved traction devices... just gotta get them very tight so they will stay put on your tires & not "snag" the bodyworks...and really watch the speed.

If the road conditions are screaming for chains: nothing else will do the job as well...
(Assuming that there's room for them.)
Perhaps a more Southerly route would make things easier?

Chains
Just my humble two cents here. Just like many regular passenger vehicles that are just not designed clearance wise for chains, looking at our Axis, I would just never want to install them unless I had no other choice. The wheel wells are not constructed well enough in my opinion to preclude build up of snow and ice in places where you wouldn't want it. This is especially noticed in the area of the front wheel wells where the assorted wires are totally exposed and would probably end up getting damaged by the slush and snow alone without chains. Of course, if you have no choice, that would change things.

Driving any distance on chains is really not a lot of fun, in any event. Though I haven't driven on them in a number of years, I used to a lot, and one time on a cross county in December, about 500 miles in one stretch. I remember being very tired after that.

Just keep in mind that in the NorthWet.. "Most states require that you carry chains (or traction devices) during the winter months, I do but have no intention of ever installing them, just carry to keep the LEO's happy.. I can always "wait it out" if needed, even 2 or 3 weeks...hell I'm retarded..errrr RETIRED .

Chains are required to be carried but that applies to chain areas when conditions for them exist. Thus.... avoid those areas.... My chain days are way over and my spouse isn't going to agree to buy one of those Earth Roamer travel campers on the lifted 4WD chassis.

The best way to win a fight?
Not be there when it happens!
I agree with your "wait it out" strategy!
