Driving in the wind

My Hurricane drives well on most days but when the wind is above 25 mph it gets 'loose'. I have weighed the coach and set the tire pressures using the Goodyear tire chart. I did the CHF, sumo springs on the front, saf-t-plus steering stabilizer and front end alignment. Other than staying put, any suggestions?

I did a rear track bar and a sway bar. That seemed to help a lot.

I offer you a wee bit of a prayer that betrays my ancestry.

“May the wind be ever at your back”.

I have often given this issue some thought, I would pull up and wait it out. Winds are most intense during the day and subside in the night unless it’s a storm.

there's nothing wrong with slowing down a little bit...
I've seen more accidents caused by driving too fast: than by anything else...

Yeah 25mph winds are pretty good and that doesn’t count gusts. Drive at the safest speed possible or pull over

If it stopped driving when winds exceeded 30 mph, I would never leave San Antonio. We consider 25 mph as gentile breeze; just enough to blow the mosquitoes away.

Seriously. Just takes a little practice. We had gusty wind warnings in Montana that said “up to 50mph”. It was a quartering headwind that kept a my interest but it wasn’t dangerous or scary.

Doesn't have to be dangerous or scary to be tiring.....

Come on now Beau, I live a little outside of SA and we don't have that kind of breeze, a windy day is more like 10 to 15 mph. I was in the panhandle last week and the wind was around 30 mph. While I had no real trouble rolling down the highway, I did have to pay attention. I'm curious about driving in winds over 30 mph.

Wow, everything is bigger in Texas. Our mosquitos are not that big, at 5 mph they take cover. You get up to 30 mph here and we take notice!

Agree on that. Our wind warning day was our only 500 mile day of a long trip and I was really spent when we finally stopped.

If I feel that I am being pushed around by wind, I would just pull over and travel when it is safer. But I am towing a 40’ 5th wheel.

I have had the big slide topper unfurl three times bending the brackets: once near Abilene winds were 25 gusting to 50 from the north and I was driving 55 mph heading north on US-283. Another time just west of Huston in a thunderstorm wind again out of the NW at 30 mph with 55 mph gust in very heavy rain; I was holding 45 mph tucked-in behind a Walmart TT and again out by Van Horn West wind steady at 45 mph. The gust are only bad in the spring and fall. During the summer and what the rest of the US calls winter, San Antonio seldom has winds above 15 mph. However there is a benefit of a steady wind above 20 mph.

Wind power in Texas consists of many wind farms with a total installed nameplate capacity of 22,637 MW from over 40 different projects. Texas produces the most wind power of any U.S. state. According to ERCOT, wind power accounted for at least 15.7% of the electricity generated in Texas during 2017, as wind was 17.4% of electricity generated in ERCOT, which manages 90% of Texas's power.

I have read many times that the rear overhang can cause this "tail wagging the dog" effect when the wind hits and I believe it based on my personal experience LT. I had the SuperSteer rear Trac bar installed and it seems to have helped. Its worth a try.

Some folks like to attach Airtabs to help eliminate the push pull effect from gusts of wind and big rigs driving by.

Airtab | Aerodynamic Fuel Savers | Welcome

Air Tabs

I would save my money for some real suspension hardware. There is nothing you can do to make a box on wheels aerodynamic.

Sounds like you need Sprinter crosswind correction.

That is part of Mercedes' accident prevention package.
)(I did notice that I wasn't being pushed around by the big rigs as much...)

Driving in the wind

Here is what did with my Class C 31W, I added Helwig sway bars front and rear, Bilstein shocks and a Safety Plus Steering control and decided ah what the heck I added Sumo Springs front and rear. I may add a trac bar but in wind or what ever it’s basically nailed to the road and is actually a pleasure to drive now.

Good luck
