DEF what brand?

When I bought my 2014 Ram diesel I pretty much only had Blue DEF available and it was very easily found at any auto supply store including Walmart for about 14 bucks per 2-1/2 gal. container. So when I bought the Gemini I didn't even question it, I bought Blue DEF. Today I was shopping for some items and thought I would pick up some DEF at Walmart and low and behold, they had another brand as well. The other brand is 8 bucks per 2-1/2 gal. Have I been spending $5 too much? What do you use?

Doesn't matter what brand...it all must meet the standard. What's most important is buying from a high volume retailer and know how to read the dates on each manufacturer'a container. Get as fresh as you can and don't stockpile it. Keep tank half full or less unless you're doing a long run and will burn it up fast.

Thanks Gritz, I understand the quality issue but didn't pay much attention to the dates. After reading your post I looked up how to read Peak Blue DEF code and discovered my container with a code beginning CO20 147 means it was made around Aug. 6th 2019. Thats pretty fresh. I will be checking what I buy in the future.

Now to learn the coding system for Super Tech DEF.

the brand doesn't matter, no more than the brand of diesel you buy....it's def.

100,000+ miles and no issues...mainly wllyworld brand, but several others along the way...

by the way, you even probably put water in your def tank, and some accidentally have, and nothing major would go 'wrong', other than your alert would go off saying that it could not read your output correctly, and give your system false readings until you filled it with correct fluid - not that I'd want to try that, but it's not the tragic end as some would assume, it's only a system to help dampen the amount of 'soot' associated with the diesel byproduct. : ) and it has nothing to do with your engine, it's all 'after engine' treatment.

Walmart: Blue DEF!
But if there are differences in the type of pee that the different brands use: I'd sure love to hear about it...

Apparently they all have the same pee formula as long as they are API certified. Just price and freshness differ. I am happy to find out how to tell if I am getting a fresh, quality product. I really never though much about it before until today seeing two products with the same claim and one being nearly double the price. But when I consider how much I buy a year it is really not a matter of saving money. I couldn't buy a Happy Meal for the yearly savings.

What if we could just buy the additives... and supply our own pee? [M
