I have a Garmin that NEEDS an update. No clue how to do that. (Used, came with rig) because while watching the RV go off-road on the screen because it's outdated, is funny...It's not practical. Until then, I've got the passengers with maps in hand, printed off directions (a necessary but lost skill) and NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED. My young freeloading travel mates are oblivious when it comes to where they are in space, let alone what exit to take. Lol....This requires max patience on my end and Foster's awareness , interaction and situational awareness for/ with the little globe trotters that are my children. *Sigh* Doing it all myself is overwhelming some times and it keeps my youngsters engaged and in it with me.

You can get updates from Garmin here. Garmin Express by installing Express.
Express updates your software free and for map updates, you may have to pay unless your unit has lifetime maps. I think you have to register your unit with Garmin also.

To update Garmin maps go to Garmin website and download the updater. If your Garmin unit has lifetime maps then it can be updated, just follow instructions on the screen.

To the best of my knowledge there are only two companies that compile map data, Tele Atlas and another I don't remember. All the google, MSN, Garmin, you name it, maps come from these two companies.
