Generator won't start

While on a recent cross country trip back to California in our 2018 Miramar, our generator stopped running. We were running it on the drive to run the house ac unit due to the excessive heat. Not sure when it shut off, could have been going over the Rockies. I have tried to start it and it just makes a low knocking sound like when you try to start your car with a dead battery. Seems to have good power to the panel per a check with a meter and the oil level is good. Does anyone have a fix so I don't have to take the long drive to the cummins service center.
Thanks

if you have one, use the AUX or EMERGENCY START switch on the dash at the same time you try to crank it...could be low House battery levels. Or, make sure you have at least 1/4 tank of fuel or it won't run.

Do you have more than a 1/4 tank of gas? The gennie won't pull gas past that point. Possibly a loose cable at the generator starter. I'm not much of a generator authority.

Starter may be dragging. How many hours? Have you noticed a slight change over how it starts over time? I'm sure its warranted but we all know how much warranty work cost us in time and travel.

generator won't start

I had over half a tank of gas, 43 hours on generator, I did try the emergency crank, but no luck. Cummins says it may have overheated and shut off. I can't get to the starter to check the wires. Thanks for the info.

Does it crank without kicking over, or no crank at all? Onan/Cummins had a run of bad fuel pumps there for a while. Ours had one: Genny worked for a while then quit and wouldn't start back up until the fuel pump was replaced.

It can also shut down due to low oil level.

How often we forget the simplest and most important part of a gas engine....plugs! If the sit...they go bad. I've learned this from years of boating and lawn mowers that sit for months unused.
