Brake controller

Hey all. I have a 2019 28E and I tow my race car with it on an 18foot dual axle trailer

I’m looking to install a trailer brake controller

Who’s done it? Any recommendations. Prefer one that is plug and play if there are any for the E450 chassis

I would start with ETrailer.com. It will not be plug n play.

On a class C chassis it will be much easier to find the factory wiring harness for the trailer brake than the F53 chassis. It may even have come with a pigtail plug to connect the controller, if not, they are easily purchased. Then it's just a matter of verifying the power and brake power fuses are installed and you should be good to go.

Of course there's always the wireless bluetooth controller to consider.

You will likely find the factory pigtail behind the change tray in the upper middle of the dash. It's easier to fish out if you pop out the change tray to locate where it's hiding and to ensure it's not zip tied. The factory pigtail is pretty long and can be fished down behind the dash to just right of the steering column and to the left of the tunnel. Etrailer will sell the matching pigtail to connect with whatever controller you choose to buy. I installed a P3 controller to pull my race trailer. My setup was 100% plug and play through Etrailer.

I pulled the invoice:

Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Ford

Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional

I've got the exact same setup in my 2017 E450. It was just as described. Completely plug and play. I wound up cutting a hole in the back of the coin tray I removed to fish out the harness and mounted the controller in the coin holder with some rubber around it to keep it securely in place.

I’d be curious to see a pic of how you mounted your controller. I’m going to install one in my 2019 Four Winds 31E and I want the install to look as clean as possible.

Here is what I installed on my car hauler. Love the ting since I can move the control to other trucks or SUV;s to pull the same trailer. Simple install too!

Tekonsha Prodigy® RF Trailer Brake Controller, Proportional, 1 to 3 Axles

Amazon $350 now which is less than I paid.

I took these pics today. The little switch is a custom addition to switch between towing my trailer and my TOAD.

I did the install in the coin tray area. Cut the coin portion out and shape the box to tightly fit the controller. I did not want it at my knees with limited space there already.

Pretty much every newer Ford truck chassis is prewired. Our class C had the harness/plug tied under the steering column... same for my F-150, which has a factory "squeeze trigger" on the dash for manually applying the trailer brakes. I figure Ford has something similar for the F-53 and cutaway chassis.

Thanks!! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I agree with keeping it away from the knee area. I’m sure it also helped minimize additional wiring under dash/steering column area. Good jog, install looks great!

I just got mine out of storage, here is a pic of mine mounted in the coin holder. It is not permanently mounted, just wrapped in some non stick liner to stay put. Not the prettiest install, but it works. I think I was doing this around midnight the night before a trip out west after I bought my car dolly. Sorry for the sideways pic, not sure why it is rotated 90*.
