Overhead drop down mattress.

Has anyone replaced the mattress in their over the cab drop down bed?

Yep, just replaced ours with this in our Challenger. Much more comfortable, better support, and it fits perfectly.

Our Axis initially came with an air mattress in the drop down bunk. That was very uncomfortable.

I took some measurements and ordered a new mattress from https://www.thefoamfactory.com/ . I got a 3" high density foam and 3" memory foam tri-fold mattress. Its the most comfortable bed in the RV now.

Yes we went to a mattress store and replaced the existing mattress with a new 4-inch foam mattress. That caused a problem however because the bed would not rise completely to the top, and I could not insert the Locking pins. Initially I ignored that, but while traveling the bed would descend slightly. That's a problem. So I manufactured a small extender using paired 3/8 bolts set into a small extension, and that's worked fine.

Welcome to the site.

We just toss the mattress on the back beds for travel so that the bunk can go all the way to the top and use the pins as designed (and let the motors retime at the top).

Understood about tossing the mattress on the back bed. The advantage of the locking pin extension is that the mattress can remain on the loft. The motors still re-synch at the top since the mattress is of uniform thickness.

An update on the mattress. After research we purchased a Milliard Trifold 4"thick full size mattress from Amazon. It fits perfectly and extremely comfortable.

Did you have trouble with the bed not going up all the way? I tried a 3" and could not get the safety pins in the bunk so I had to go back to the inflatable. I think the newer ones have more space and include a foam pad.

Could you send a picture of your fix please? I would love to change mine over.

Yes/No: We store the mattress on the back beds when we travel; so no problems at all getting it to go all they way up--just remove the mattress.

Loft pin extension

Initially we moved the mattress to the back each day but that is a hassle if you move a lot. I had the same problem with the pin lock not fitting so I made a pin extension. Now I raise the loft as far as it will go (with the mattress in place) till the motors stall and synch. I insert the pins (see attached drawing) and lower the loft just a tiny fraction on an inch to secure the pins in place so they do not vibrate free. This has worked fine for 2 years.

Yep, that's the one we got. Perfect fit, very comfortable, no issues with pins fitting when the bunk is up.
