Power awning won't retract.

2016 E450 Chateau 31e

My awning started being slow to retract recently. Then it wouldn't retract at all until I kept helping it in.

I have found that if I retract it the "wrong" way and let it come back in, it will work ok. The retract side of the motor that wouldn't retract will now extract slowly and with a little help.

I need to figure this out and I'm wondering where to start.

Get a ladder and try spraying all the joints with silicone. I have to spray my awning about every 6 months or so, if not it gets very slow retracting.

Do you just do the joints you can see on the awning or do you get into the covers on the ends and spray in there? If so, do you know how those covers come off?

I may just pop those off and see if I can see what's going on.

The covers do pop off but you can spray all the joints without removing them. Don’t use anything like WD40 that will attract dirt.

The awning on my 2018 Thor ACE 30.3 will not retract. It will move a couple of inches in or out, but will not retract.

Also make sure you are plugged into shore power, on your gear running the engine when you retract the awning. The little bit of extra voltage may be enough to get things moving. You wouldn’t think so but once I started doing it that way I never had a problem with mine.

I had that problem before when the unit wasn't level and leaning more toward the awning.

No matter what I've tried, mine won't retract unless I spin it the opposite way and use extract to bring it in. It's still working like that a year later...

I'm sure I need a motor...if only I knew which motor to buy...

mac 'stop breaking stuff' gyvr....

If your awning is a Solera, the motor is shown as AF in the attached photo; part number for it is listed at the bottom.

It there only one motor that powers the awning or is there one in both ends?

mac 'one to a customer' gyvr...

Only one motor, at the end of the arm closest to the front of the vehicle. Other end is referred to as an "idler". The full owner's manual can be found at https://lci-support-doc.s3.amazonaws...cd_0001369.pdf

The manual also has info on things like cleaning, maintenance, how to operate it if it loses power, etc.

Happy Retracting !

Ours (2015 Windsport) is a little tricky, and think it's probably overdue for a lube job. Extends just fine. If fully (but not over) extended, it needs a little "help" to get past that first movement - just like my creaky elbow. Have my co-pilot push retract button (or I use the remote, if I remember I have it) while pulling down slightly on the lowest joint. Once it starts moving, it's off to the races. Just my experience, and one more item on my maintenance list. Your mileage may vary.

Could you give me an example by name of a silicone spray? Thanx.

Do not use silicone spray. Use " Dry Lube Spray". HD, Lowes, Hardware stores.
