Removing Axxera from Class C E450 dash

I’m looking for help from someone who has removed their Axxera 615BHM from their Class C Ford and can tell me how they got it out.
The Axxera AV615BHM in my 2017 Chateau 31W has worked great for first year and now screen mostly stays on rear view and erratically switches back to whatever mode I had last set it on. After reading a lot of posts commenting on flaky connections in the wiring bundle to the Axxera, I would like to remove unit and go through the wiring. I’ve looked at the Axxera manual but I can’t get the bezel off the radio so I can remove it. I’ve pried the corners and in the mid points and can’t see how to get it out - almost looks like it’s bigger than the opening. Afraid to pry the bezel too much and hear the dreaded snap of breaking plastic.

There should be four holes in the front of the radio: two on each side. In your Thor bag you should have two radio removal tools--they look like "C"s. You push the ends of the C's into the holes on the radio, then squeeze the C's and pull. You may have to remove the bezel to see the holes.

Thanks for the quick reply Jamie! I unfortunately did not get those tools in my owner bag but I think I can make them from coat hanger from video I saw. My problem is I can’t seem to pry the bezel off the front - the manual shows a small picture of the bezel and looks like it has 4 clips - 2 on each side which should be easy to get off - but this one is a bugger! Looking for the secret removal technique before I break it.

On my 2015 Four Winds 22 E-350, I had to remove the radio. Try as I might, all the videos and special tools I was not able to do so. I couldn't get the bezel off.

I took it to a car audio shop and ask if they could do it. I watched, in less than 10 minutes they had the radio out. The answer was not the special tools and the you tube videos. The entire false front of the dash, from the instrument panel to the glove box is snapped on in pieces and is easily removed. The radio was then held in by 4 bolts into the metal structure of the dash.

Thank you thank you Nosticks!! No wonder the back side of the bezel looked larger than the dash opening - it was not supposed to come out the front! Now I also know that Thor bolted the unit in instead of using a sleeve!

Did you replace the radio or just repair wiring?

The reason I had to take the radio out was to get at a blown fuse behind the radio.

Wow - sorry you had to do all that for a fuse! Thanks for the tip - I will look at making things like that more easily accessible when I finally get the dash front off. One thing I saw after removing engine cover and looking up under dash was that the camera switching module was really jammed in behind the radio with wiring bent really tight - will try to relocate that module if possible. Thanks again for your help!

Nosticks - the dash pulled off easily and was able to remove 4 screws holding bezel to dash, slide the Axxera out partway and remove the other 4 side screws holding the bezel to the radio.

Did pull tests on all wiring - all wires passed - eventually found that the reverse switch has been misfired to the Axxera SW1 input for the steering wheel control. Cut the wire and the Axxera touch screen functionality and all the menu screens returned. Connected the reverse switch to the reverse wire input and the camera screen switched on - everything is working again and I’m a happy camper once more!

Thanks again for your vital info!

Hi Scott
Can you take a picture of the camera switch? I like to install one on my RV

Aruiz305,
Sorry can’t take picture - dash is back together and module buried behind radio.
But I have attached a spec sheet of the camera switching module made by RVS Systems. If you go online, there is also a manual for it. It’s pretty generic, so you can use it with any in dash system that has a rear view camera input. Mine switches the side view mirror cameras with the turn signals and then automatically returns to the rear view input.
Good luck on your project!
Scott
