Shower with 6 Gal Hot Water Heater

This morning I told my wife that she would have to learn how to shower in the new MH with only a 6 gallon hot water heater. Her response was "Sell it, Go Sell that thing right now".

I know that there are a lot of variables but generally on a normal warm temperature day, how long can one take a "hot" shower? What is the recovery time on the hot water heater with electric? ...with propane?

The RV is brand new so I am not going to swap to a tank less system any time soon.

Any advice will help me to be ready for when she takes her first RV shower.

LOL! To answer the "how long of a shower" you have to answer the question: Is she willing to take a Navy shower? (shut off the water while soaping up, etc.)

With a Navy shower our 6 gal heater works well for 3 consecutive showers in our Axis. Recovery on propane is faster than on electric only and recovery with both propane and electric turned on is even faster.

On our ACE with a 6 gallon water heater and Oxygenics shower head you can take a normal shower with both the electric and gas heating turned on. If you do manage to get it to turn cold it's only about a 15 minute recovery time.

Sounds like you wife is just looking for an excuse for you to get rid of the MH.

Even when boondocking and conserving fresh water and grey tank capacity by using the water shutoff valve between soaping and rinsing we have done 4 people in a row through our shower.

We have been able to take two consecutive showers without losing hot water. We purchased the oxygenics shower head, which has helped because it reduces the time for my wife to wash/rinse her hair.

The unknown factors are how warm is the cold water coming into the water heater, how hot to you want the shower water and how long do you shower. I find than my wife likes a 110 degree shower, but I like a 100 degree one. With water coming-in at 70 degrees, that means about 8 gallons for her and 12 for me with no recovery. If you turn the water off while soaping up, men generally use 5 gallons and women use about 8 gallons. The Atwood water heater has two methods to heat the water: propane and electric. The recovery rate for propane is 11.6 gal/hr and on electric 6.2 gal/hr. They can be combined for a 17.8 gal/hr rate. That means if you fill the water completely with 70 degree water it will be 130 F (the eco setting on the water heat) in about 20 minutes. So to answer you question, I find that with both heat sources on and the water heater completely full of hot water, we can both shower without running out of hot water in the summer. In the winter, it is different as the water coming into the coach is usually around 50 degrees and both of like the water about 5 degrees hotter. We need to wait about 20 minutes between showering to be safe.

If you swap out your current system for a tankless instant one: she can spend the entire weekend in the shower!

Spent 20+ years in the Navy, both the wife and I take the Navy Submarine shower. Turn water on, get wet, turn water off, soap up, turn water on, rinse, repeat once if necessary.

The size of the shower does not really work for soaping up while the water is running anyway.

I agree.
Do you think that the shower enclosures were made that small to intentionally try to make us minimize water use?

At least the "Baby-Wipe" approach, can be a shared experience!

Just haven't eaten yet...I'll soften up here in a bit and we'll work something out for her. My wife takes a 40 gallon shower each morning at home...I confirmed this with the meter recently. Knowing the limitations of the RV shower...and having owned several RV's in our life together...she does really well with the 6 gallon tank. Turn both gas and electric on while she showers...nearly makes it on demand.

40 gallons? There's an easy solution: Just make friends with six nearby campers, and her run from camp to camp... to camp to camp to camp to camp to camp!

Tell her if you would have waited one more model year you would have a tankless. Your model now has that.

When you hear that scream from the bathroom because to DW ran out of hot water, just look at you wallet and whimper...you are going to part with some money. OR you rely on Good Sams reviews and only stay at campgrounds that have a 10 rating on the bathrooms. i would just go ahead and start looking at tankless. wont take very long before your homework will pay off.

patrick

P.S. don't ask me how i know.

It would be nice to have both gas and tankless with "y" valves. Tankless uses a lot of water where, when dry camping, the gas/short shower is a must. May be something to look into...a portable (meaning stored away with quick disconnects), tankless water heater.

I was reading an article about the tankless systems... (It turned out to be a "tankless" job! )
Both systems seem to generally use the same amount of space. But I've never heard of anyone wanting to simply add one or the other of them.
