Generator Meter issues

Anyone have an issue with the on board generator Meter and the dashboard readout not matching? The firefly LCD and the Oman meter match but the dashboard shows 17,800 hours more than what the Oman shows. Coach has not been "alive" for that long! Just wondering how to get these into sync?

Are you sure you're not looking at "engine hours" on the dash readout? I've never seen generator hours in more than two places and most of the Ford chassis' have an engine hours feature on the dash readout. It's more for when the chassis is used for an ambulance or power service truck that sits running in Park a lot. It's a second checkpoint for engine service for those applications and not so much for what we do with them, but its there on all of them. It may be "1,780.0"

Someone else here had a similar problem where the dash meter was not counting hours, but some unknown smaller unit which caused the reading to be many times higher than actual hours. I think the resolution was an Onan warranty fix.

I thought the same at first but them the same issue would be true..the coach was born less the 13k hours ago, how could either the genset or the motor have more hours than possible. I did check the engine hours and they seem reasonable, unlike the generator.

I'll call Onan, but my guess is that because the on board meter is accurate, the issue will become a Thor issue. Thanks for the response, provided a path I had not thought of

Yup, I might agree if the onboard meter was the culprit I would agree. I'm guessing that the discrepancy would be used to not have to cover any costs of repair - anything to avoid accountability.

mine is about 5 hours less on the dash Freightliner readout, versus the actual Onan Generator's readout - I suspect that the Onan factory runs these thru some testing before shipment - which would explain the difference. The Freightliner's readout will only show starting when the wiring was attached at the RV factory.

17,800 hours of testing before actual delivery to the consumer is a sure sign they will last!!

I just hope it's not a countdown until the unit craps out - I better watch to see which way the meter is running here!

Gee, I am not happy that mine are like a half hour off. I guess, I'll just be happy.

My understanding is this is a Freighliner issue...dash is reading in minutes instead of hours

Interesting, I'll take my calculator out and decide by 60 and see if the numbers are even close- thanks for the feedback jdamann!

Yes it is a Freightliner issue. They will flash your system and all will be good, except the dash hours and Firefly hours won't match.

Gen Hours

Freightliner has a software update to the dash display. This is to fix the back light that was flashing and to update the gen hours.
Well it only updates the light issue. The dash display shows the gen time in minutes. The firefly shows it in hours as does the indicator on the generator (I have a Cummins).
I went back to Frieghtliner after I did the software update and was told they cannot fix the display reading in minutes.

Thanks Polishilldave, I tried dividing the number of minutes showing by 60 as there as 60 minutes in an hour and I get about 3.5 times what the generator and Firefly show. don't that that's the answer, but I'll keep digging. Even going with 100, I'm about 100 hours above what the gen meter shows.

After the flash display now reads hours.

Simple Division

Right, from memory I have about 30 hours of gen run time and the display shows something like 9600, so minutes it is not....maybe metric....Ha!
