Thor does tend to push the weight carrying limits of the Ford chassis...as well as the Spartan/Freightliner chassis in some cases..(non tag axles)

The saddest part...all manufacturers push the limits...I think they design the perfect motorhome, then run the weight limits...reducing items and sacrificing quality components and building materials for lighter ones as much as they have to to fall within chassis weight limits. I asked the factory rep during our tour of two Plants in Wakarusa, why they didn't build the Class A cabs with more metal instead of so much plywood...he said..."weight and cost". He also told me...no airbags in the A's because the "deployment" would blow forward more than towards the occupants...as it should. Basically blow the front off.

We always travel with fresh water full, grey/black empty on way out. I also try to keep gas tank and propane full.

Coming home, grey and black are usually 1/2 to full.

Weight is no issue, the e450 list cargo capacity of 3199 lbs. We have been able to get unit to 13,400 plus 5200 lb trailer. even carrying extra 50 gallons of fresh water in RV, tools and parts. We never get to the 14,500 GVWR/22,000 GCVW limits.

We did a lot of math homework prior to purchase to be certain towing/loading would no be issue.

Performance of V-10/6 speed has been impressive. I know the diesels pull harder but I never have issues merging passing with or without trailer.

Some more weight we tend to overlook. Hot water tank holds six gallons @8.35#/gallon - 50#. Propane tank full is another 40# depending on tank size. A case of beer in bottles is a another 40#. It all chips away at the weight budget.

Sigh... I'll have to be more vigilant about cleaning the wax out of my ears, and the lint from my bellybutton...

Liquid weights

50 gal gas 375 lbs
40 gal water 300 lbs
20 lbs propane 20 lbs
10 gallons refreshments 75 lbs
2 passengers 400 lbs
camp stuff 100lbs

total listed above 1270 lbs...it all adds up. Add a couple of kids and it's approaching 1500 lbs. Something to think about.

A little more research - a bottle of wine weighs 2.7#. I’ll need to keep SWMBO to 2 cases per trip. I already trade off 10 gal of water for 2 cases of beer.

Your rig is built on 11,030-pound Sprinter chassis, and Ford Transit motorhomes on much less. Personally, I’d love to see some E-Series motorhomes built on SRW chassis. Ford makes SRW F-350 pickups up to 11,500 pounds, and RAM over 12,000 pounds GVWR.

For some reason too many buyers think DRW is a must even on smaller rigs.

I was watching an RV show on TV and they asked the trivia question about fuel mileage difference per 100# of weight. The answer was a 2% increase in fuel consumption per each 100# of weight added. So that 400# in the fresh water tank could add an 8% increase. Your actual results may vary.

Keeping RV weight down is an excellent idea for many reasons, but I wouldn’t expect much fuel savings; particularly if you do most of your driving on the highway.

Not much you can do for fuel economy. My original point was just the difference in handling, as it was the first time in a year the tanks were all empty. It will rarely be that way, as I will always travel with water mostly full...but...what a difference!! I'll find the weight reduction in load-out, not water.

Assuming a 10,000 lb RV to start, 100 lb is a 1% increase in weight so the MPG drop should be less than 1% given that frontal area wind loss does not change. Has anyone ever stripped out an RV to save gas mileage?
