Inverter

My Thor Citation fridge runs on shore power and gas only. Can an inverter be installed so it can run on house batteries?

Why would you want to do that? It is far more efficient on gas than electricity. On electricity it uses a resistive element to generate heat that is about the worst way possible to generate heat.

When running on gas an RV fridge uses very little gas and can run for a long time on the available propane in the RV.

What Jamie said. That's the way it was engineered.

You likely don't have enough batteries to run it very long at 40 amps DC.

sure, you can... it's your choice, it's your RV!

you might do a trial run by simply finding a nice small format Power Inverter, off the shelf in the tire section at W*mrt or auto part stores. The one with the 'alligator clips' to easily attach to your existing battery(s) will work fine.
You'll need to then decide if you can easily unplug your existing fridge's power plug and reach the new Inverter. If not, you can use an appropriate extension cord.
But, if you do this, you'll also need to replug it BACK into it's original outlet when you are back on shore power.

...then, you can leave the fridge on Elec, even when no shore power, or while traveling, and without the propane.

There are some other ways to handle this type of Inverter 'wiring' scenario, but those may come with time, if you find this works for you.

Now, as with any power draw from your batteries, you'll have to keep an eye on them, as they won't likely have any charging when not on shore power... but if you'd like to have the fridge running on the batteries while traveling for several hours, it should work just fine. When you get back to shore power and plug in, the Converter will then provide recharging to the batteries. You can then turn the Power Inverter off when on shore power.

enjoy : )

Having thought on this further: Are you concerned about running it on propane while on the road? In that case start the generator.
