Added front speakers on ACE-Axxera radio

My Thor ACE 27.1 had only 2 speakers installed, which were behind the driver/passenger seats, and made hearing the radio difficult while driving. The radio is equipped to handle 4 speakers and I spent the day taking out the radio and installing 2 JL Audio 4" speakers in a customized speaker box I made out of 3/4 plywood. Made a HUGE difference. All that's left is to cover the speaker box with matching carpet, may call Thor and try and get a piece of the factory carpet.

Love this mod! We love our music and were trying to figure out how/where to put additional speakers. You obviously figured it out so, can you give me the dimensions of the box?

I used 3/4 inch plywood. I cut 4 pieces 27" length, 2 of them were 6" high and the other 2 were 5" high. The box height had to be a maximum of 5" or else it would not fit under the dash. I then cut 2 squares and attached to the box ends, using screws to attach all pieces. The speakers came with a template I used to cut the holes. All was done with a jig saw. I made a small hole on the top towards the back and ran the speaker wire through it.

I just picked up matching carpet and will be wrapping up the box, should blend right in. I'll send you pics once I get around to doing it.

I love the console cup holder too. Is that part of the Ace or an after market?

Phil,

That cup holder is part of different Thor models. It is mounted to the top of my Challenger's fiberglass engine cover.

Finished product. Purchased carpet at Lowes which was a very close match the factory carpet and used contact cement to glue it on the box. Fits nice and snug and will not move during travel.

So how did you connect them? Did you use the RCA connections or did you hard wire them into the "Power Harness"?

Thanks! I tried using the RCA jacks but there was very little volume from them. How many watts are your speakers?

I hard wired them. I used the unused speaker wires designed for the additional speakers on the harness. The 2 ceiling speakers (in the rear) are actually connected to the front speaker wires on the harness, which are the 2 white and 2 gray wires as shown on the wiring diagram. I used the unused rear speaker wires (green and purple) to connect the speakers. I cut the wires before they entered the harness and hard wired the speakers to them using butt end connectors.

The speakers are JL Audio TR400-CXi, coaxial 4", 35 watt speakers. They have a very nice sound.

Very nice!

That looks great! I'll be copying your work(sincerest form of flattery). As for the RCA outs, I think they are line outs to other amps, which would explain the low levels.
