Heat and noise reduction in Vegas
I had read some threads about excess heat in a Vegas/Axis, and anyone that has one, knows there is a lot of engine noise. I have used a product called FatMat, in classic cars and trucks to reduce noise and heat, so I thought I would see if I could install some in the Vegas.
It was quite a project but the things I found were surprising. I knew the insulation in the Doghouse was minimal at best. There is zero insulation above the engine, including the defroster ducts and Vents, No wonder the defroster is so slow to respond. I also found that the corner pillars are open at the bottom, allowing heat or cold to travel up them.
So, I plugged the pillars with insulation, and then put FatMat on the underside of the Dash deck above the engine. I wrapped all the ducts as well. Then applied it to the dog house, put the small piece of insulation back and adhered it with FatMat.
A quick test drive and the noise is better, not exactly dead silent but better.
I am sure it will make a difference in heat.

I added Dynamat Xtreme and Hoodliner to our Axis. May venture to other areas once I forget what a pain the doghouse was to deal with!

I used the Fatmat also for noise and it attenuated the noise. Ever had a heat issue.

I just inspected the doghouse on our Challenger. Factory did a neat job of installation, but the material is thin. I've ordered the Dynamat kit to upgrade. Should I remove the factory material before installing the Dynamat?

As long as the factory insulation is stuck good I wouldn't take it off. My insulation was on good but the foil tape was in bad shape so I removed it. To get better insulation and coverage I filled in the gaps in the factory insulation with Reflextix using 3M spray adhesive. I suggest you use some large poster paper and make patterns first, it helps to get a better fit. Also it's easier to cut the insulation with a good pair of scissors, doesn't cut very well with a box knife.

FYI, here's what Dynamat recommended when I inquired about which products to use. And SuperD, those scissors at Harbor Freight worked perfectly!
"We recommend two products for the engine cover:
Xtreme and Hoodliner.
First, install the Xtreme. This product will damp any vibrations/resonations in steel, fiberglass, or wood panels to reduce structure borne noise.
Over the Xtreme, install our Hoodliner. Hoodliner is the 3/4 inch thick, peel and stick material you mentioned. Hoodliner used with the Xtreme will do a good job to reduce engine noise and heat."

Just returned from our first long trip since installing our DynaMat, the difference was nothing less than outstanding!!! When on cruise control I sometimes rest my right foot on the engine cover, prior to the DynaMat it got pretty warm, after the DynaMat it was absolutely cool. Engine noise while cruising was almost nonexistent, just a very slight noise to tell the engine was running. When kicked down to passing gear the noise was there but muffled and much less intrusive.
My conclusion is the DynaMat was a total success!!! If I had the choice I would absolutely do this mod again, only sooner!!!

Doghouse will be the same with probably very little insulation, just like mine originally.
