Axis Atwood Heat Pump Installation
I recently replaced the A/C unit on my Axis 25.1 with an Atwood P/N 15033 15,000 BTU Ducted RV Air Conditioner with P/N 15022 Inside Assembly. Atwood also sells a set of adapters, P/N 15089, that makes it easier to use the existing thermostat wiring for the Atwood unit.
The Axis is used in the south during the winter so heat is as important to me as cooling.
This is the quietest A/C I’ve ever had in an RV. It has several great features:
In heat pump mode:
The fan doesn’t start until the exchanger has heated up.
It will start the furnace if the thermostat set point is much higher than the room temperature.
If the compressor can’t provide enough heat to maintain the set temperature, it will switch to the furnace. In auto fan mode when cooling:
The fan speed varies among high, medium and low.
The fan continues to run on low when the compressor shuts down. This helps to eliminate hot spots. It has a timer function for delayed start/stop. You can set it from three to twenty-three hours.
It comes with a remote control.
Here's what the thermostat looks like:
There are some disadvantages:
Compressor “clunks” when shutting down.
Installation requires running three additional wires to the compressor. 12 volts positive, 12 volts negative and the wire to control the furnace. These are available at the thermostat location.
I was able to run the wires above the bathroom door and then out the wall. At that point I used cable raceway to cover them.
