Carefree Direct Response - Do you have it?

I have discussed, with my dealer, the possibility of adding Direct Response to my awning when my coach goes in for service in January.

If you have Direct Response here are my questions:

Does it work?
How sensitive is the system (at what wind speed does it retract the awning)?
Was yours OEM installed or added as a mod?
What was the ballpark figure for adding as a mod? My guesstimate is 300.00 ish.

My dealer has the kit in stock but is not willing to provide an estimate until they see my coach.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Dave,

I have OEM Direct Response on my 2015 Windsport 34f and I will tell you this....it works, however, I left my awning out one trip, and returned to my awning retracted with both arms broken. My coach was only 3 months old! It gave me a false sense of security to know the awning would "automatically" retract if heavy winds/weather would occur. The weather got bad very quickly, so it had no chance to retract in a timely matter. It does not retract it any faster. After consulting with Carefree and my dealer about my case, they fixed it under warranty. Lesson learned, I will NEVER leave it extended while we are away from the coach for a long period of time.

As far as sensitivity, it will begin to automatically retract when it senses @ 8" of constant movement.

Thanks. That is good to know.

Basically it sounds to me like it may not be worth the investment. The better option may be to save the money and continue doing what I do which is retract the awning at night and when away from the coach.

As for not giving you an estimate prior to seeing the coach, that is understandable. I won't give out estimates until I see what I'm working with.

No argument from me on that issue, although, they do have 2 of the same model and floor plan sitting on their lot. Also, I asked for a ballpark figure and not a written estimate.

I won't get an estimate until I take the coach in for service January 18th. My guesstimate is 100.00 for the parts (based on the dealer's parts catalog) and 200.00 for labor. It shouldn't take them more than 2 hours to install the system.
