CHF F53 Ford

Okay, I've read about the CHF here (cheap handling fix) and everyone seems to think it's the thing to do. So, the before and after, was there a noticeable improvement in handling and what happened to the ride without adding other enhancements to suspension. I just read on IRV2 that someone reversed their fix because he thought the ride became to harsh. I'm supposed to have it done next week and want to make sure it's thing to do. Don't want DW with an "I told you so"

She's going to do that anyway, it in the rule book.

At 2004, my RV is a bit older than most. But before the CHF, the coach "wandered" enough that it felt like the wind was always blowing. And it was a handful. Since I did the CHF, the coach is much more planted, even when the wind is blowing or when I get passed by a large truck.

Pre CHF and with no other chassis enhancements the coach would sway heavily in turns. Body roll due to wind, weather or large passing vehicles, was very noticeable and required steering to counter. CHF reduced the movement immensely. If the suspension stiffened up I didn't notice it but then I don't have a Jeweler sitting at the dinette splitting diamonds. https://youtu.be/P0PFl73XF3g?t=216

CHF turned our Challenger from driving a drunken whale into driving a whale with a slight buzz..Definitely helped.

You may notice that your front suspension loses some upward travel after the CHF and possibly cause a slight clunk when you make a hard leaning right turn. Also when leveling your front wheels may be more prone to come off the ground. This is easily fixed, there is a guy over on iRV forum who goes by the name TeJay. He makes plates the attach between your sway bar and the sway bar links. This puts the geometry back to stock while still using the CHF. Plate has holes for several adjustments. This explanation actually sounds more complicated than it really is.

Contact TeJay on iRV to buy the plates he makes.. about $50 if I recall. Well made and fixed the clunking for us. CHF along with Saf-T- plus stabilizer has totally changed the handling of or Challenger... Now it's a sober whale..LOL

Thank you all for your comments. I'm having it done next week with a
Couple of other maintenance items. Should improve the handling.

Did the CHF on our ACE last week. Took the MH out for a weekend excursion to try it out. The trip out to the state park we battled a 20 -30 mph wind all the way there so I didn't have much opportunity to really feel the after effects of the 'fix". On the ride home we got a good indication of what the "fix" actually accomplished. Took a ton of the roll out of the coach. The MH goes in for an alignment tomorrow before we add a steering stabilizer. After that one more another road trip and maybe a rear track bar before we take off for a month on the road.

IMHO, I'd try a steering stabilizer before the track bar. You might find that you don't even need the track bar, at least that's what I discovered..

We used to get pushed around by cross winds and passing semi's, now I have to look at the trees to tell if the wind is blowing, and have to check the mirrors for approaching semi's since I can't "feel" them anymore.

If you don't mind me asking, what year model is your ACE?

Thanks,

Did the CHF a couple weeks ago and I can feel an improvement. Finished installing a Roadmaster steering stabilizer earlier today and will take it out on the weekend to see if helps or needs adjustment.

Picking up our coach, expected a CHF, a steering stabilizer and alignment. Was told they couldn't do the chf because they felt that in an extreme situation the link might snap. They've replaced the links on a number of coaches with just that problem. Needless to say the other fixes weren't done. Definitely conflicted now.

I don't believe this at all. With thousands of chf done and the huge thread on irv2 with no reports of broken links. Just think they didn't want to do it out of lack of knowledge

That's strange. Where did you go to have the work done? I've never heard anyone say anything negative about the CHF.

That said would replacing the ford bar with a roadmaster anti sway bar and steering stabilizer get me to where I want to be?

I've talked to three different shops now two of them work exclusively on motorhomes and none of them got terribly excited about the CHF. could be they're more interested in selling me parts and additional labor than a cheap fix
