Heat Pumps...

Has anyone in here used an AC unit which also contains a heat pump?
They've told us that it'll allow a camper, to take the morning chill out of their rig: with resorting to burning any propane.
Any opinions???

some do have the optional electric heat, which can do just that... as long as you are on shore or gen power

the heat comes from the roof units, so the effect might be more minimal than if you just used a few small electric floor heaters, on low setting, like many of us do.

Thanks!
If I'm on shore power: I'm going to use it for everything that I can!

I have used our heat pump several times to avoid using the furnace. Worked fine for us in temps of 40 degrees or up. We like it chilly at night so we would set the thermostat down to about 55 and set it on automatic. A little more noise than the furnace but it works fine for us. In the morning raise the thermostat setting.

THEY are not heat pumps as a residential unit, it is just a electric heating strip, not a large amount of heat but useful to take the chill out of the air

Hey Bob,
We use the heat pumps when hooked up to shore power all the time. Puts out more heat than I thought they would, as long as we are above 45 degrees. Used them all this weekend. Really does cut down on the propane usage.

Had one in our Alpine fifth wheel, worked well unless it was real cold. Used it exclusively when we had electric hookup and above 40 degrees. Our heat pump and fireplace heater together did a good job of keeping the rig warm even when about freezing. (We did use an electric blanket at night). I think in 4 years I only used my furnace a couple nights at Glacier National Park when the temps dropped around freezing. We live down South and haven't done much cold weather camping so far.
