Redirect Generator Exhaust

Recently purchased a 2016 Thor Siesta and want to change the direction of the exhaust pipe for the generator. For some reason they designed it to vent out on the "party side" of the vehicle (where the awning, TV, etc are). With the awning extended on a hot day, the exhaust adds to the heat (not to mention fumes). Has anyone redirected it out the back or other side? Looks relatively easy, but would require longer pipe and not sure if that would affect anything. Any help is appreciated.

That does seem a little bit unhandy!
If you can take the exhaust out the other side of the rig (or even the rear...): look for a spot where you could even temporarily add an exhaust extension, that takes the fumes up to the roof height.
(Some places want you to use them...)
Let us know what you come up with: good luck!

They actually make a device (can't remember the name) that takes the fumes straight up but it wouldn't work with this as it's under your awning. What a wacko design. Maybe that device could be modified with a couple bends in it to clear the awning...

yet another example of "something tells me these designers have never used an RV in their life".
I've had this strong feeling even since way back in our popup camper days

Yeah, I think I'd be taking it to a muffler shop. If it were me I'd most likely take it out the back...and as Gritz suggested, I would keep the Genturi design in mind as I did it....(have it exit at a point that can go straight up without conflicting with anything)

My genny tailpipe comes out right under the leading edge of the slide, so I had to rig up an angled adapter to use a genturi....not to mention that when the slide is out, there's a really big gap right to the inside of the rig not too far away from my genny's pipe.

you can't simply go UP because that's where your awning is, of course, but a simple pvc 90degree elbow and 9' of tubing would take it out the other side, at least while you're parked...

I would think that a muffler shop could re-direct that exhaust out to the rear. The Gen-turi is a neat product to look into. In your case, it would work well in conjunction with a rear-exit exhaust the make the "party-side" very hospitable. I bought a Gen-Turi for my Axis but I have not had the chance to use it besides function testing in my driveway.

Me either...
But they're on sale in Camping World for about $130 bucks.
(How did I remember THAT? )

EDIT: Camco makes them... The Gen-Turi!

I think the smell and toxic fumes of burning plastic would be worse than the exhaust itself. PVC would melt and burn. A Genturi with a couple 45 degree elbows would resolve the issue. I think a call to Engineering is in order and have Thor pay for re-routing.

Reroute the gen exh pipe

I'd take the path of least resistance and reroute it to the other side right behind the rear tire. My 2018 ACE had it coming straight out the left rear. Problem was when I decided to install a rear rock guard the pipe was in the way. I loosened the exh pipe clamp on the gen and just swiveled it to route under the generator door. Moved the pipe bracket and now it exh to the left rear corner.

Upon closer examination, routing out the other side is not an option due to things being in the way (specifically the engine exhaust). The pipe was easy to turn towards the rear and I am having my neighbor weld an extension pipe to clear the cabin. Ultimately is will exist out the back just adjacent to the engine exhaust. I will keep you guys posted, thanks for the input (except the guy who recommended selling).

Thanks for the update, and now that you have a direction in which to go: good luck!

Shouldn't be too difficult to find some metal flex tubing, that you could temporarily attach to redirect the exhaust, while you are running the generator. What fuel does your generator burn? We use our generator so infrequently, I went with a propane burning generator this time, fumes from it are negligible.

Whichever way you route it, make sure you don't over route it and cause excessive pressure in the extended exhaust tube. I would figure out your plan then quickly run it by Tech Support with Onan. Good luck!!

Interesting. I have a 2015 Siesta with the diesel generator. My exhaust comes straight out the rear next to the engine exhaust. Made it easy to strap an old piece of downspout to the ladder, add a 90 degree conduit sweep and made my own gen turi for about ten bucks. I’d send a picture if I could figure out how.

Rerouting

I should think a length of dryer hose from the exhaust to out back would solve the problem when parked. Should be resistant to heat given it's intended function.
