Let’s talk CB’s

So just ordered my President McKinley radio and mating up to a 3’ Firestik antenna. Seemed like a good setup from researching. Planning on mounting it near the drivers side front on a flush mount. What set up y’all running?...c'mon driver.

I installed a 2 meter rig to replace the 11 meter CB. Too much noise and trash talk on 11 meter

Too much skip huh? Can’t wait to try out mine. Has the auto tune so should be an easy initial set up.

I installed the 3' Firestix No Ground Plane this past spring. I first ordered it with the black flush mount bracket. However the mounting of the bracket into the side of my MH would not have worked as the mounting bolts were built into the brckets and were way to short. I then went with the standard mounting bracket. I drilled 4holes plus one for coax through side of MH, used large washers on inside to help spread the pressure point. Once tuned all worked good enough for me as I really do more listening than talking.

In the 1970s you could communicate 100 miles pretty easy with a mobile CB Radio. Today range seems limited to less than 1 mile. HAM License is easy to get today. ARRL has lists of 2 meter repeaters.

HAM is my option. Carry the YAESU FT-60 and I make lists of repeaters and respective frequencies in the areas I travel JIC. When all else fails, HAM will be the last one standing as most repeater stations have backup power sources. It's a great way to keep up with possible emergencies as it will work when cell and internet are not available. CB was great in it's day but too much "just to keep us awake at night" chatter 24/7...plus atrocious language. Most truckers are going to 10 Meter...many illegally without the proper licensing.

Breaker Breaker Good Buddy...When my ears are on ,,, I use a small handheld and only turn on when backed up in traffic on the Hwy.
Truckers heading opposite direction giving great info on why backup, how far, what lanes are blocked, I use that info to stay on Hwy or get off next exit. I'm 10-7.

I use it for that too and occasionally I run into great conversations like I did when traveling through Canada heading to AK.

I have a small CB unit and a capacitive thru the glass antenna. (Used driver side window in the overhead bunk). Not much CB traffic really. At one time there was a effort to use CH 13 for RV traffic, did not pan out.

I have a CB on my Gold Wing trike and found very little use for on on several coast to coast and up to Alaska and back trips. Only times it came in handy was finding out what was causing long traffic backups and getting myself re-routed.

Now it is used mostly for group riding with a Gold Wing Chapter or the Patriot Guard. Hardly ever hear any traffic in the Lower 48.

Google Maps is today's source for "red roads".

I use WAZE app on my phone. It eats up very little data. We just got back from a 2700 mile road trip to UP Michigan. I have an unlocked Icom 7100 and Little Tarheel mounted on the driver side thats my rv in the photo https://www.tarheelantennas.com/recr...vehicle_photos

I use the TuneMatic lite to tune the antenna. It has 20 memories. I have 7.200 and 14.300 pre-programed. All I have to do is change bands and press the memory button. It takes about 5 seconds to change bands. The bands are dead to say the least. So put it on CB 19. Things have calmed down 1000% on cb the last few years. The CB plus WAZE has come in handy.

I have the CB on my Goldwing as well. Not much use when riding alone but it's great for group rides.
We usually have a CB bike front and back and middle unless everyone has one.
I would love to have an HF rig in the motorhome but not sure I'm willing to go to the trouble of ant install.
