Underbed storage supports

A picture of the supports I placed in the underbed storage compartment.
2 x 100 lb supports is a little overkill for the King bed - could have done with 50's!

My Challenger came with them as well, although, I may have to replace them with some beefier ones. When I raise the mattress and compartment lid to remove or store the folding dining chairs the weight of the mattress and lid will slowly close the compartment.

These are the links to the Amazon site I purchased the shocks and brackets for the mod. I went with the 100 lb shocks and is a little overkill but so nice as a simple touch of the mattress and it shoots open. Harder to close and you have to hold the wood to close - not the mattress! I used machine screws with nuts as the screws would easily pull out with the force (purchased at Lowes). I also bought a piece of metal to place on the other side (hidden) of the wood on the side of the bed facing rear wall of couch.


These are 445 N force - which are almost impossible to close by themselves - I will be replacing the 225 N ones on the outside kitchen as after 6 month, these are starting to sag already!

I had been meaning to do this some day, but this thread prompted me to order the parts
I finally got around to installing

I went with 45# springs based on previous posts.
I ended up having to install some hinges to allow them to work
then with only one spring in place I found that it's too much
The mattress weight will hold mine down, but only barely. Lift the mattress and the hatch comes up!

I had a 20# spring that I took off my entrance door because it didn't dampen the opening stroke. (so I'm not sure if it's still 20#)
I tried it..... too long to fully close the way I have my brackets, but I would say that a single 20# isn't quite enough. I would say a single 30# spring would be about right..... in my case anyway (short queen size bed with a hatch about half of the mattress)

blw2, way to go getting at it. Personally, I find the hardest part of any mod is getting started!


Hope you get the correct springs soon and it works great! Like I said in my post prior, my bed will spring open with one finger under the mattress. I feared it would pop up on the road with a bump in the road, but it doesn't. Keep at it!

Thanks for the amazon links! I have them in my cart (45# struts though, instead of 100#) and will be doing this after a couple other mods.

I have to replace the outside kitchen struts after 6 months! Not going to bother Thor as they will only send e the same garbage they placed in the first place. Going with the 100's again. I would rather struggle to close a hatch than have it slow to open or sag!
