When do you fill your propane tanks?

Hello, I have a 2018 24 HL Thor class c on a Mercesdez platform. The propane tank indicated 1/4 full and I was wondering when is the best time to fill it?

Wait till it's close to empty ? or does the MH have some safety features like turning of the generator if the propane is below 1/4 full and I should fill before empty?

Any Guidance would be helpfull.

It somewhat depends on your usage. We filled our tank last fall and it still reads 100%. Our usage if very low since we only use gas when my wife is cooking and that does not consume much. I normally get it filled when it gets below 1/4 but could probably wait longer than that. If you use gas for a refrigerator, water heater, stove, and furnace you may want to fill it a bit sooner. In a previous unit we could go through a full tank in one weekend when the temperatures got colder.

Sprinter chassis here also... We're at 89%, and figure that the tank will make it to the end of our season...

I too have a sprinter chassis (2018 Siesta) and usually fill when it gets to 1/4 tank when I am on the road. I use it mainly for the refrigerator on the road and heating water for showers. In the winter since I am usually at a campsite with shore power I try to stick with an electric heater and not depend on my furnace too much to save the propane.

I fill it when it runs out. I also carry a portable grill and 25# tank. When the RV tank run out I will hook the 25# tank up with a hose my buddy at the propane shop made. I will then refill the RV tank at the next convenient location.

Is there a reason (besides the time it takes) to wait? Our generator is propane. So I don't like running low. I usually fill up when it gets below 50%. I do understand it takes time and is a bit of pain to fill up.

I will fill it, or top it, when ever I'm somewhere convenient to have it filled or topped. Its not that big a tank on the Sprinter chassis so I don't like letting it get too low.

A local gaz vendor had a flat rate to fill the tank. Same price even if tank was half full...

Today a found one that charges by the liter so I will fill up in a couple of days. One thing less to worry about.

I have mine filled whenever they fill my 500 gallon tank at the house.

One thing I found in my travels is that some campgrounds will charge a minimum for LPG. For instance they may want a minimum sale of 6 gallons at $4.00 per gallon.

That makes sense. I've always filled up where they charge per litre. (Canadian) I wait until my 20 pound tanks for home are empty cause it's always the same price to fill them.

Had our rig for just over a year and the 20 gallon tank is still 3/4 full. Mostly used for the stove/oven which does not take much.

When not on the move we keep our rig in an RV resort on Hilton Head Island. There is a propain service that comes around every Friday.

I'll typically top it off when ever I need my smaller BBQ tank filled.

We only use the propane for cooking, and for keeping the 'fridge cool; when we're on the road.

I look at the level before each trip, and based on length of trip and conditions (primarily if I expect to use the furnace) I decide what to do... Most other usage is minimal.

Having paid for gas delivery to site once, I don’t choose to again... lol
(That was a 3 month stay that used the furnace more than expected... had started the trip ‘full’ - as full as they’ll make it...
Added an extend-a-stay valve after that, so I can hook up to exterior bottle in a pinch - and great grill connection for grill with a regulator...)

Once I'm below a 1/2 I usually get it refilled at the next convenient opportunity. Usually on arrival or departure from my next campground, or after refueling at Pilot or Loves.

We do the same. On rare occasions we've run the furnace.

I need your gauge. The one inside my rig is horribly inaccurate and the one on the tank isn't that great either.

We've had the rig for almost two years and filled the tank twice. It was about half full each time.

17 gal propane tank.
Only thing that uses Propane is the cooktop, gas oven & gas BBQ.
Fill twice a year or when tank gets down to 5%/10% full.

I fill mine up when I fill up with diesel. I like Flying J but don't have one near where we live. Many gas stations around here sell propane (and have free dump stations - so I do everything at once.)

Tractor Supply, local Co-Op, or Suburban gas wholesaler.
