Recommendations for Southern Vacation
Any recommendations for a week in the Southeast, using National Parks campgrounds? We have two kids (3 & 17) and one dog (lol). Thanks!

Not a National Park and a lot more costly LOL but if you haven't been to Disney's Ft. Wilderness its worth a visit--even for only a few days. Its the best resort/campground we've ever been to.
Granted the 3yo may be a bit young for it, and the 17yo is probably too old (or thinks he/she is).

JamieGeek, thanks for the reply. I just realize I missed "1" in front of the 3 for my daughter. We have considered that but we were there two years. That will be a winter vacation in the RV. Thanks again for the suggestion!

Well in that case! LOL still 13 may be too old for it as well (our son is 14 and scoffs at the idea whenever we bring up: "Hey lets do a Disney trip").
You could browse around this website: http://48in366.com/
She took an Axis to a ton of National and State Parks last year taking a lot of pictures along the way. Maybe you'll see something that looks interesting.

If your kids haven't been to DC, that would be my best suggestion. Cherry Hill RV park claims to be the closest to DC. Public transportation will take you from the entrance right into the heart of the Washington, DC Mall. We did a two day Gray Line tour, then went back on our own for two more. Great way to see a little of a lot.
Since you only have a week, I would add Great Smoky Mtn National Park and Colonial Williamsburg to the short list.

A campground that we enjoyed and our grandsons loved was in Chattanooga, Raccoon Mountain. Great caves for exploring. Both easy and challenging tours available.

Cosby Campground in Great Smokey Mountain National Park is great. Uncrowded, lots of trails, and Dollywood is 45 minutes away.
For a State park, I'll add Hunting Island State Park SC(Ocean Beach, fishing, trails, lighthouse).

DC
I agree with previous poster. Washington, DC. We just got back from a two week trip ... we spent 3 days in DC. We stayed here: https://www.nps.gov/gree/index.htm
There is an Enterprise rent a car directly across the street from the Park entrance. We rented a car and drove the 15-20 min drive into DC. It was faster then taking the Metro. And since we were only there for three days time was important for us. But it you prefer there is a Metro station available nearby.
The park was a nice retreat after a fun filled day in DC. It is very wooded. Saw wildlife (deer and fox). It's easy to forget that you are surrounded by city. The ranger station had several kid friendly activities and handouts/coloring books. And if your kids are working on getting National Park passport stamps, DC is definitely full of places to visit.
Our kids are 10 & 7 and they had a blast! Highly recommend.
Our first trip our in our 2016 Axis 25.3

As long as people are recommending DC: I'll 3rd that recommendation.
I'll also note that the two recommended parks: Cherry Hill Park and Greenbelt Park,
MD are only about 5 miles from each other! (The differences between them are quite dramatic: Cherry Hill Park is more of a "resort park" with full hookup sites, pools, theater, mini-golf, etc. and Greenbelt Park gives you more of a "roughing it in the woods" feel.)

Dauphin Island in Alabama. The campground backs up to a nice beach on the gulf that is off leash for the dog. There is a Marine aquarium place for kids across the street and a few blocks down is a old military fort. Also can take a ferry to other side of bay to gulf shores.

well except that DC is not Southern...at least by this southerner's definition
I'd reserve suggestion depending on what the OP is looking for...
beach, mountains, amusement parks, museums, etc....

Florida Keys. Be warned though, you may not want to return to reality.
John Pennekamp State park
Bahia Honda State park
Plus many other private rv parks there. Good Luck

If you travel to Florida in the winter...you will want to make advance reservations ... as the campgrounds are very busy.

Great place in Florence, Alabama
I echo the kudos for Cherry Hill Park in Maryland close to DC. Right now we are visiting family and we are staying in McFarland County Park in Florence, Alabama. It is unbelieveably beautiful. It has full hook ups and is only $25 a day. The spaces are quite large and we chose the shaded spots under the tall pine trees. It is right on the Tennessee River. Here are some pics.

Somewhere near Charleston, SC. You can visit The Battery, historic Charleston, the plantation from Gone with the Wind (and North and South), Magnolia Plantation. There are plenty of places to enjoy fine meals and sweet tea.
