Pet Friendly RV Parks

Starting a thread to identify pet friendly RV parks.

KOA Wytheville, VA. Right off Interstate 81. They have 2 large side-by-side dog parks (Camp K9). If your pets are interested there is always an abundance of deer roaming along the outer edges of the park in the morning and evening. Great park to stop for the night or spend a few days.

Dave,

We have also stopped at Natural Bridge KOA in Virginia. The entrance to the campground is directly across from the exit on Interstate 81. The dog park is okay but the campground is a little tight. The people that run it are very friendly and they do escort you to your site. I did not like the fact that some of the sites were tiered. It made it almost impossible to set up x-pens for the dogs.

The best thing about this KOA is that you can visit Natural Bridge and take the dogs!
There is a trail, appox 1.5 miles that goes along the creek. You do have to pay and there are quite a few steps to go down, but our Britts really enjoyed it as we did.

I'm going to plug the Port Huron KOA here one more time LOL (Port Huron KOA | Camping in Michigan | KOA Campgrounds ).
We don't have a dog but have noticed that they also have a "Kamp K9" area--including an agility course. There also is a hiking trail around a small lake and if fido needs/wants a longer run/walk the camp backs up to a rails to trails route that is over 10 miles long (with a really cool trestle bridge at one end: https://www.stclaircounty.org/office...s/wadhams.aspx )

Most of the KOA's have 'Kamp K9s' but some that we were in were so small. Also, has anybody run into a campground rule that state you pet cannot be left unattended. This means different things depending on how the campground interrupts it. I have had campgrounds tell us that if you leave the RV, you have to take your pet with you.

We leave our pets in the RV for short periods of time(grocery shopping, dinner, etc.) but with some campgrounds this is not allowed.

I hope that everyone with pets see these posts and give feedback. It would be very helpful to know what a campground offers in regards to pets. Such as, Dog Park, is there one and how big? Special rules, like are X pens allowed, breed restrictions, additional fees for pets? Proximity to pet friendly activities, beaches, restaurants, trails, etc.

This information, coming from the people on this forum, would be invaluable to all RVers who travel with pets.

I'll put in a plug for Miller Creek RV Resort at the intersection of US281 and US290 just south of Johnson City, TX. This is an excellent base for touring the Texas Hill Country. Miller Creek has a dog run, dog washing station and there's always the creek for the water-loving dogs. US281 and US290 provide access to San Antonio, Austin, Marble Falls and Fredericksburg, among other points of interest. Paul and his staff keep the place in immaculate condition.

We are thinking of a Fall trip. So far we are considering Lake in the Wood campground in Narvon, PA or Lake George RV park, Lake George, NY. Anyone stayed at one of these campgrounds? What are the dog facilities like? We will be taking our Brittts, otherwise known as the kids.

Thanks,

Fred

There are two issues on unattended pets.

Safety issue if something disastrous should happen to your RV while you are away.

The second and most likely issue is a pet barking constantly while you are gone. This can result in your being invited to find another park.

I think almost every RV park allows dogs, I have never been turned away with my 15yr old Jack Russell,, but I find many dog owners think it is "ok" for their dogs to bark at things not related to personal security. People, train your dogs, nobody wants to hear them. The most common is the dog that barks at every person who walks their dog past the campsite. These dogs are not trained, they should not bark at other dogs walking by! Then there is the family who brings the dog but ignores it... the dog barks all the time when they are around, it wants to play and be involved. Yet the dumb owners think this is natural and lets the dog bark on end for the time they are camping. Dog owners have some respect for quiet and peacefulness. Thank you

I agree there are some "dog owners" that need to have some respect.

Congratulations, you pushed my A##hole button

Now a game of word substitution: Replace the following words

dogs = children
bark = scream, whine, yell, cry
owners = parents

Same applies. In fact I would be willing to bet that campgrounds have more problems with children that trash and vandalize facilities and other peoples rigs than they have with an RV owner's dogs.

This is not to mention the drunken adults sitting around campfires at all hours of the night talking so loud they can be heard 10 spots over while their dog is laying there peacefully sleeping.

I will also go out on a limb and say that most dog owners have more respect for fellow campers than parents.

The original topic of this thread was Pet Friendly RV Parks. I've been on RV forums for over 15 years, and I don't think I've ever seen a thread that had anything to do with pets that didn't turn into a danged argument between pet lovers and pet haters. I thought this one might be an exception to the rule.....I guess not.

It absolutely amazes me that those of us with pets can't discuss pet friendly RV parks in peace. If someone else doesn't want to be around pets, that's fine - just go to RV parks that don't allow them. No different than the over 55 parks that don't allow kids.

Pet Friendly RV Parks

RustyJC,
My guess is that the reason they always turn into an argument between pet lovers and pet haters (your words -not petef's) is due to the very small percentage of pet family's that are not fun to be around. Just last night I was awakened at 12:30 am by a dog barking. Does that mean I don't want to be around pets? No, because three families in our group this weekend have dogs that I just love. They are well behaved and friendly and seldom bark. This is opposed to the RV several sites down that pens their poor dogs up for hours at a time (4-5 hours) and go off site seeing while their poor dog barks the entire time. My thoughts are that all parks should be pet friendly but that their are some pet owners that should not be pet owners. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread but you also hit a hot button when you accused those of us who don't like to hear a dog barking for four hours of being pet haters. That is not always the case.

Fine, responsible pet ownership should be a given, as should responsible parenting and mature adult behavior. Let's all agree on that. Now, can we get back to the subject of discussing pet friendly RV parks??

Sure. If anyone is interested in a dog friendly private members campground in Missouri then check out Lost Valley Lake Resort in Owensville MO. It is off the beaten path but about two years ago they turned a petting zoo into a dog run. They are a Coast to Coast resort so if you are CTC then the rates are reasonable. Otherwise they are not open to the public.

One park I am going to mention is pet friendly, however, if has been raining for a day or tow you need to stay away from the dog run because it turns into a mud bog. That park is the KOA in Williamsburg, VA. They have a Kamp K9 with agility course but it gets very mudding in wet weather. It is not just the dog run but the walk to the dog run as well.

Bottom line, decent place when dry but terrible when wet.

Almost makes you want to get a dog doesn't it.

We may be calling them this afternoon. We have to postpone our New England trip until next year but this is close, in the mountains and during the fall.

Perhaps--we've been on the fence about a pet for a long time. The deciding factor is that our son doesn't want one at all.

If we did have a pet the reviews for that campground would warrant a special trip to NC just to camp at that campground! LOL
