Hi Muffi!
Welcome to the campfire!
Since it's 430 pounds: why not just put it on a utility trailer?
(One with large tires, and really decent wheel bearings!)
You could just slide most of it under the rear of your rig, to get it out of the way when you're at a site...
(I'm NOT a fan of carriers... )

Thank you for your swift reply Bob. Yes, trailer is a solution but we were hoping to have all our stuff on the RV and avoid towing.

There actually are carriers that are capable of carrying a full-sized Harley...
(But I just can't remember who makes them... )
Since we have a Toy-Hauler: our "Toad" doesn't get towed... it gets to ride inside with the rest of the family!
So I have no practical experiences with the carriers: just the knowledge that they exist...

EDIT: Did you take a look at these yet?

This is the one I use to carry my scooter, which is 500lbs. Works quite well but I had to add a 6” hitch extender because the scooter was too close to the ladder.

Do not get confused between Elec. motorcycles & Elec. scooters, with Elec bicycles they are very different & have different laws. Like. Drivers licence plus MC licence or endorsement & in IN. that requires passing a 3 day riding class. Helmet laws, Eye protection, Age requirements, Plates & Insurance, Weight 150 / 500 pounds.
..Elec. Bicycles WITH PEDALS.. Federally recognized as a bicycle. No age limit, No plates, No insurance, No MC classes or special licence. Can travel on Sidewalks, Trails anywhere you can ride a bike. Can park and lock on sidewalk for free. weight 50 pounds.
I have carried Many Bicycles & Motorcycles as you have seen in my prior photos. Just because the rack says 3/4/5 hundred pounds...
..With the roads we have I would not use them. Bikes & Scooters bouncing around like yoyos in the rear camera. That is why I made a custom rack.

A good Quality Elec. Bike should Not cost you more than $1500.00.
Most all Elec. bikes are Re-branded Chinese bikes and if you find a model you like. Go on Alibabba or similar sights and you will find the same bike 4 $$$ cheaper!
Stop me in the campground and test out our bikes!!!
Safe travels to All this Summer...Rev.

Thank you Kev. So you use the one with 600 lbs capacity, right? did you have to upgrade the receiving hitch on the RV in any way? I fear ours can only handle 500 lbs in vertical load. you say you also use an extender - that does reduce the capacity even further, doesn't it?
we are trying to figure out all possibilities so we avoid getting into trouble in case something breaks and the manufacturer says we overloaded the hitch.

yes, I carry a scooter 50cc

I registar as a motorcycle so i don't have problems in other states.. bought the carrier from Harbor freight. It is good to get around close by, much more then a few miles the vibrations get to your hands.. that said I have zipped around many places..

Can you please recommend which one to go for that can handle some 430 lbs of weight and can be used on a MH?
thank you
Have one custom made. Narrow Alum tray. Secured into hitch receiver then bolred to right and left frame.Click image for larger version

Ron has a rack/carrier for his Suzuki 650cc dual sport .. which weighs in at about 380lbs. which has served him well for over 15 yrs. He designed and had it built before they were available commercially. It is steel rather than aluminum . Somewhere, on the Forum he has photos posted.

Enjoy the new scooter.

The technology is amazing. They look difficult but they have servos and sensors to keep you balanced. Check when you are at tourist areas, many places have rentals and tours. We like them on bike paths in the mountains or beach or just cruzing the park we are staying at. We often take them to eat and park them in the bike area or by the front door. I keep them locked together.

Hello

I dd not upgrade the hitch in anyway. The tongue weight of the hitch is 600 lbs.
The carrier is 100 lbs. and the scooter weighs 225 lbs. So I am well below the 600 lb. limit. Also the 6" hitch extender is a Blue Ox with a tongue capacity of 1,000 lbs. I could have bought a cheaper hitch extender but none had the tongue capacity of the Blue OX. BTW the hitch extender weighs 11 lbs. Hope this helps.

Kev

Hi! I tow a Yamaha smax scooter (approx 300lbs). I use the Trackside carrier from Cycle gear
https://www.cyclegear.com/accessorie...rcycle-carrier

The carrier is rated for 500lbs. The ramp on it stinks. I ended up adding an extender, the picture below shows it without.

Bear with me here....Forklift capacity is rated at 24" load centers, assuming every pallet is 48" X 48". This is industry standard. The farther you place a load "out" the more it reduces lifting capacity. When we start talking hitches and hitch extensions, I wonder how this math plays into them as well? The farther you move the load out from the hitch pin, it would seem the load capacity would be reduced by some factor. Plus, you need to consider rough roads whereby the upward and downward forces could double the weight for a moment. Is there data available for these considerations?

You are 100% correct, there is definitely a reduction in load capacity the further you extend out. I'm not sure if their is an equation to determine what that reduction is.

You should talk to guys @ local weld shops. They can make you a sturdy, lightweight carrier. Mine always have 3 point hookup very stable. This is my 4th custom.

Quoted from etrailer.com:

"Do you have problems clearing your bumper or spare tire when you tow? If you are hearing your hitch accessories hit your car, then you need a hitch extender. Hitch extenders come in various lengths that will extend your receiver tube opening to where you need it. When using an extender your towing capacity and tongue weight will be reduced by 50%. For example, if you have 5,000 lbs towing and 500 lbs tongue weight, you will be reduced to 2,500 lbs towing and 250 lbs tongue weight. This is because the hitch extender moves the load out farther from your vehicle, applying more leverage to your hitch."

A guy in Tech Support with Reese also told me this reduction can be even more depending on the quality/brand of the extension.
