Watch Your Bikes!

Hopefully, this was not a member of the Thor Forum Tribe. But take this news story as cautionary, amusing or both.

APD: Man tries to steal bike from motorhome, owner bites his nose off instead

Safe travels, ya'll!

Wow! It sounds as if they had a real interesting time of it...
I agree: let's hope that it wasn't one of us!

Looking that address up, I see it as an incident waiting to happen. There's an empty parking lot where he probably was staying overnight. Heavy industrial area and very questionable. Lesson here...be aware of your surroundings. I could be wrong but it was 5AM when this happened...this being what he "woke up to".

Very strange that the bike was on a bike rack on roof of motorhome. What kind of motorhome has a bike rack on roof? Even on lower profile van campers, most owners don’t place bikes on roof.

It’s always best to keep expensive bikes out of sight. A lockable bike garage not only deters theft, but protects bikes from weather.

Thor, if reading this forum, it’s never too late to offer an Axis/Vegas touring floorplan with a bike garage under the rear Twin/King beds.

It's Alaska: things get done differently up there...

The bikes could have been just hanging off a ladder rack and the article writer translated that to "roof" (or the owner said "roof" because that is where he thought he heard the noise from).

This is the most logical circumstance; that may have existed...

But I find it easy to imagine someone pitching their bicycle up on top of the roof..."for safe keeping!"
It'd be pretty tough to see at night: particularly if you're worried about the local bear population that's looking for a midnight snack!

You’re probably correct, although I have a difficult time imagining someone risking going to jail, or worse yet getting shot, over a bike someone would hang off an RV ladder.

Either way, I would love for Thor to offer an Axis 24.1 with a low-floor across-the-RV bike garage similar to this one so it wouldn’t take buying a small $150k plus RV just to store bikes securely out of sight and weather.

Chance,
Do you know which manufacturer produces that RV?
It DOES look pretty neat!

Remember, it was in Alaska..! LOL who knows what the potential thief was thinking (or what he was on).

Last year, while traversing the Trent-Severn Waterway in a friend's yacht, I witnessed a line of scary people in a drug store in Peterboro Ontario where they were giving the crack-heads a shot of Methadone every few hours! They had a 2 foot square window in the back wall with an orange juice machine running. Pharmacist stood there all day doling it out. He said the government paid him well to do it...keeps them from stealing and looting the neighborhood. 20 or more in line...all day! Alaska is no different!

Well said Bob. If that would have happened in California, they would have arrested the RV owner.

I think it’s a Leisure Travel. Would be easy to have an even larger bike garage (or pass through for anything of significant size) under Axis/Vegas twin beds if planned correctly from onset. Key is to have a chassis drop much like they do with motorhomes that carry cars in garage. Picture below shows just how low the compartment floor is.

It would be great if a garage was an upgrade an owner could build after buying an Axis, but I think it’s not practical. I can see doing a lot of it myself, but relocating the generator and installing larger doors keeps me from trying it. Too bad Thor doesn’t see need for compact motorhome with bike garage. So many of the new DIY van projects are being built around hauling bikes and motorcycles.

Leisure Travel... Thanks!

That looks pretty darn handy: even to a guy who thinks that this is what a garage should be!

You already have a garage — just need a car that will fit in it. But we digress.

Years ago we were at an RV show and there was one rig where there was a slide out with a ramp to load your motorcycle and a complete garage area with tool boxes, etc. Really nice rig but if I remember it was like 1/2 mil or so. Just a bit out of reach for me!

the last show I went to, there was a 5th wheel trailer I thought to be a great design. inside, you could go upstairs to the front bedroom, like all 5th wheels I've ever seen. The mid section was the kitchen/dining area...also similar.
The rear section was the living room... also similar

but it was upstairs. I forget how high exactly, but basically it took the ceiling height from insanely high to something about like a 'normal' rv. Prob about the same as the bedroom.
I thought it gave the inside a nice separate room feel. It was well done.

Under the living room was a huge basement storage area with a massive drawer slide out.

I thought it was a wonderful design, with the only exception being someone that has trouble with steps. I'd love to have a MH similar to it.

about the roof rack...I wonder if it wasn't like the older rv's that had a rail around the rear and sides. I remember seeing lots of class c's with a similar rack. At some point that idea went away.
