30 amp to 50 amp

Any body ever try one of those adapters that turn a 30 amp and 15 amp into 45 amps?

It will NOT work if the 15a is a GFI>

And besides, the 15 and 30 are very likely to be on the same feed and you will only get 30a max anyway before the breaker trips. Another way to spend money.

Interesting device there....and good question!! I have a 3100 Champion generator and 2 Honda 2000's. I wonder if I can use the 30A plug on the Champion and just one of the 15's on either Honda (or vice versa) and get 50A? This could be the next bread slicing machine!!

The short answer is: NO When was the last time you saw a non GFI 15a outlet in an RV park?

yes, they work fine...don't let the 'nasayers' get you down...

It is an adapter that can use both a 30amp RV outlet and a typical 15amp or 20amp 'household' outlet. True, if the 15/20 outlet is a GFCI, it will immediately trip the breaker, but if you have access to another 'regular' outlet, then yes, it provides up to 45-50 amps.

Now, because of the GFCI issue, I typically look for a regular 15/20amp outlet somewhere nearby, such as a building, where the outlet is not GFCI. You can easily run an extension cord to reach it.

We also have the dual 30-amp adapter, and have used that several times as well, giving us up to 60amps.

You can even make use of two different household outlets if you have the adapter you mentioned, with another adapter to take the 30amp to 15amp...so two 15/20amp outlets for 30-40 amps of service.

There are a lot of options. And when you travel alot, especially to private homes and not-so-normal campgrounds and rv parks, you can get really creative to get the most amps, especially during the hot summer months.

Since we are in an RV forum you must realize that RV 50 amps is at 240 VAC whereas RV 30 amps is at 120 VAC. So the answer is you can provide 45 amps at 120 VAC but that is less than half the capacity the RV 50 amp is capable of.

The 50 amp lines coming into an RV is 2-phase 50 amps giving you 240 volts between the two hot legs (like an electric range, or dryer plug).

As far as I know: No appliance in any 50 amp RV actually requires 240 volts to operate--instead they just use the two 120V legs as two separate 50 amp circuits. This is why many of those adapters work: You can feed in the same phase 120V into each leg and it will give you a 30 amp leg and a 15 amp leg (which, is less than 1/2 the capacity available from two 50 amp circuits).

So far all of the campgrounds I've been at have had the 50 amp plug be a true 240V 2 phase line as I've been able to charge up the car using it (I have a 20 amp Level 2 EV charger that I use in campgrounds and it requires the 240V 2 phase feed).

Nope, no "kinda, sorta" about it. It doesn't matter if your RV uses the 240 VAC supplied, it is still supplied and that adapter still only gives you less than half the full 100 amp capacity (at 120 VAC) available in the correct plug-in.

Um that is what I said.

It will work. If you have the dual 30A to 50A adapter...even better.

I agree that non GFI 15 or 20 Amp outlets at campgrounds are not a given. Last December I even encountered at a nice campground my first 30A that had GFI protection. That didn’t work well for me because I have a minor issue I need to fix — just hasn’t been a priority.

I’d guess either 30A and/or 15/20A having GFI will trip a breaker with that adaptor.

Everybody must have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night...so many rocket scientist. This will work, period! If you encounter a GFI outlet...maybe not. If you don't plug.it in...maybe not. BUT...if used with two 30A generator plugs or any other non GFI outlet....IT WILL WORK.

I think that I'll just keep plugging into the 30 amp receptacle, and keep my big mouth shut...

But if I need that much power: I'm probably at home anyway!

Camco specifications make it clear these adapters WILL NOT work when plugged into GFI outlets. If planning to plug into campground pedestal, it would be advisable to check whether it has GFI.

Your unit has 30-Amp power (as I recall) so this type of adapter isn’t applicable to you anyway. However, if you want to learn why these adapters won’t work with GFI outlets, I’m certain there are knowledgeable electrical engineers here that can explain it in detail if asked nicely. And to be clear, I’m not an electrical engineer.
