Bolt strength on pin box

In looking at the Morryde pin box on my RSSA--the load ratings list:
5 grade 8 bolts/side = 21000lbs
6 grade 8 bolts/side = 24000lbs

Interestingly, all 12 bolts on my Suites are grade 5....

I'm sure there is plenty of bolt strength with the 5s, just seems odd that MR or Lippert puts a rating for G8 and then installs G5.

Joe

I changed mine out to 3/4" frame bolts but the top two I replaced with 5/8" frame bolts.

The holes are actually punched at 11/16" so my pinbox actually tipped up on my first outing.

I would change them out to grade 8 for sure!!! Also fill ALL the holes.

Your GVWR is 21K. Are you planning to overload your rig?
If the rig had a 24K weight rating I would then expect to see the G8 bolts.

Got grade 8 bolts and pin box is riding on the 5 bolt pattern. Came from the factory at the 6 bolt pattern but I lowered the pin box to get more bed rail clearance. All appears to be working fine on the 5 bolts pattern.

How do I tell what grade of bolts I have, anyway?

Look ahead the head of the bolt. If it has 3 hash lines they are grade 5, if it has 6 hash lines they are grade 8.

Take a look at Cummins' pic--there are 6 hash marks around the bolt head. If you have 6 hash/diagonal marks, you have G8.

Not using the engineering standard here. But in some circumstances, using a lesser grade bolt can allow for the bolt to bend before it shears. The Grade 8 steel is a harder material at the molecular level and will shear without warning. The Grade 5 will bend giving an obvious sign of overload before shear.
Used this method during some racing days.

Appreciate all the info, but my original thought was: Why have info on the pin box for G8 bolts when the bolts themselves are G5? Wrong tag? Wrong bolts? Inquiring minds want to know...
Have yet to hear of any bolt failures on any fivers on the forums over the last 10 or so years, so I believe my 12 G5 bolts are fine. Working up to eliminating the flange on the outer plate on my pin box for clearance purposes.

I went back to your original post, as well as looked at mine, a 19k GVWR rig. I have 12 g8 bolts.
My interpretation of the tag is: Morryde gives the specs for the number and grade of the mounting bolts. Some may have only 5 bolts some have 6, But they should always be grade 8 bolts. Whoever did the install used the wrong bolts. BUT the tag is also suspect. How can you install using only 5 bolts? They must mean 5 or 6 per side, but thats not what it says.

Thanks for making the effort to help--Google is good, but doubt the exactness as you found out.
My RSSA also has a 19k GVWR--which in itself is a concern. I bought it used and am just doing research into various aspects of the suspension and such. My current concern is the clearance on the pin box-to-bed side of my 450, as the trailer does not have the risers. Good clearance so far, but was in an oddly shaped/leveled site recently which brought up the contact concern and have asked some welders about removal of the flange--people who know metal (but not engineers) all say the flange is unneeded, if in fact the entire plate is needed at all with the large washers in use. It is my intent to remove the side plate and have a new one fabbed out of slightly thicker steel plate and without the flange.
Thanks,
Joe

I've been coast to coast several times with 5 grade 5 bolts per side. No plan to change unless I have another reason for bolt removal. Each 3/4 inch Gr5 bolt has a clamp load of over 21,000#. 10 total 3/4 Gr5 bolts are way more than sufficient.

anijet,
I looked up the strength of the bolts, and no, not worried about them. Just odd that the label addresses G8 and has G5 installed.
Like a lot of guys, I may overthink some stuff, but the GVWR is low for this trailer vs similar DRV models--the actual 'dry' weight on my trailer is 18300 with a 19000 GVWR, not logical.
