all locals are simply NOT in HD, it depends on the spot beam

while it might not happen often, if you’ve traveled enough, you’ve ‘seen’ it : )

in western NC, basically N Georgia, if I tell Dish my NC zip, they have my locals as Asheville, all in SD
I choose to stay on the ATL spot beam, which also covers this area, all in HD

Thanks. I ordered all of the stuff to convert my SWM 3 Traveler to a Dish Traveler yesterday. Just didn't know if I had to worry about heat from the DPH42 causing a problem with the rubber roof. Everything will be in by late next week then just need to get DISH out to the RV park to install the H3 and Joey.

Mike, you will enjoy your upgrade! Just remember to unplug the hopper when you are traveling. When you do this, it will lock the hard drive and keep it from being damaged.

Juice=would not just unplugging the trailer from the pedestal do the same thing?

Bill, was thinking the same thing.
Also, just wondering about how important this is--my trailer is wired to solar setup and most everything has power all the time-kind of a hassle to remember to disconnect it before moving trailer. Guess I'll find out if it quits working...

Wing=The hopper is 120v. You don't have a whole house invertor, do you?

That's a good question. I have a 2800 inverter that kicks in after I unplug, so in my case, I still have power. Also, when you hook the fifth wheel plug to the truck, it keeps the batteries charged as well and makes the inverter happy!

Yes, have entire trailer on the inverter. Just disconnecting from the pedestal won't drop the 120v items. Well, almost all of it....
Just wondering if anyone has had the H3 fail due to bad hard drive?

When I had the tech out for the Winegard install, he suggested unplugging the H3 to protect the hard drive inside. Since I have the 2800 inverter, it powers most all my 120 volt plug ins and that includes the TV area.

Joe,
When/if we see each other at Cross, can think this through...I am going to have to rig up a power strip to disconnect all the entertainment stuff when on solar and not using them.

Hopefully, we can come up with a fix for you! We are in Clermont, FL at Thousand Trails now and will be heading up to Perry, GA for a night and then Lebanon, TN. Will be there till the 25th or so and head up to LaGrange for the repair work. See you there!

Joe,
Not sure what a G4 card is--in my experience, Dish does not have much knowledge of how to work an H3 with the Traveler.
Do you have the H3 receiver?

Not the problem--he HAS the locals, just not in HD. Guess it needs to be determined if the locals ARE broadcast in HD...and are you using the Traveler + Hopper in your coach?

not all areas have Locals in HD, but we’ve sometimes been at an address that might be in an ‘overlap’ of several Local spot beams, and if you change your ‘address’ closer to the one you want, you may find that they are in HD...

Dish typically ‘assigns’ you and your address to a specific area for your locals when you provide them your zip code...

but,
whether you are actually ‘physically’ at that address or not doesn’t matter - as long as you are receiving locals for that area then you are in that spot beam, even if Dish tells you otherwise.

we are parked in western NC, and Dish would ‘assign’ us to Locals from the Asheville spotbeam, but all those are in SD, and fewer channels, even some from Greenville SC(?) - I give them an address just over the state line in GA, and suddenly I have all HD Locals from Atlanta... nice.
I could even pick up Chattanooga or Knoxville’s Local spot beams, if I preferred.

fun, ain’t it!

We live in Missouri but spent a couple of weeks in Florida in March. We stopped receiving local channels while in FL so I called Dish and gave them our location in FL. All was good. We got the local channels. However, when we got home I realized that we had not been picking up local channels on our home receiver so our DVR didn't record any of our favorite shows. So now, if I want local channels when out of our normal viewing area I use the antenna instead of calling Dish.

With the Hopper 3, you need to call Dish to change zip codes if you wish to receive locals in that area. It makes no difference where you are, if in Miami and you want locals in Madison, WI, just give them that zip code. You have to call in as the Hopper 3 will not change zip codes on the app, at least not yet.
