Gps
I spent a lot of time researching this topic. As I wanted a good GPS for our full time travels. We went with the Garmon 760 Dezl.

Any particular reason you selected that one over the RV-oriented Garmin RV 760LMT?

Don't you have the built in GPS in your truck?

I think I can do more things with it as far as settings. And it also is loaded with a HUGE list of campgrounds.

No, as I thought it would be a waste. Why have a truck that can tow 30k and not be able to route with weight, height and hazmat restrictions. It may be the same software GPS that is in my Mazda 3.

I bought a Garmin Dezl 770 trucker version as I was looking for info that was helpful for a HDT instead of the RV version. So far, it has worked out great.

We don't use our in dash nav system in our RAM, my wife knows everything!
Seriously though, I try to use Google maps to get a "feel" for where we're headed in advance , my wife usually gets on her I Phone if we're not sure about getting into a campground or whatever. She's great at guiding me which allows me to concentrate on my driving and watching for low branches, bridges or whatever.
So far our system hasn't failed us yet.

(Hopefully, my wife doesn't read this. ) Maybe it's the fact that your wife has an iPhone and my wife has an Android, but when I've depended on her for directions, all too often it winds up being "You should have turned right back at that last intersection!" Of course, there are always LOTS of places to u-turn a truck and 5th wheel!
When I dare to say anything about it, the standard response is "Well, my phone didn't update our location fast enough." Fortunately, the truck's factory GPS generally gives me a heads up before she does.

We carry a truckers Atlas and use it with the built in system in the truck. I really like the trucks system.

If you have a smartphone or a tablet I highly recommend the iExit app:
https://iexitapp.com/
(Not affiliated just a happy user) We've used this guy on our long trips. It follows you along the interstate detailing what is coming up in the next few exits. Very handy...

Personally, I would never rely on a GPS on a vehicle. I know of at least one person who followed a vehicle routing system that peeled back the roof of their fifth wheel on a low overpass. The system in our 2014 Expedition is a very accurate routing aid, but not with regards to RV's and low clearances.
I make sure we have our Trucker's atlas with the heights of overpasses and bridges. The only drawback to those is that there are occasional changes and one needs to buy a new atlas. But, that's still cheaper than repairing a roof.

I have the Garmin in RV 760 LMT, I like the fact it has RV parks, service, and give warning for speed limit changes, sharp turns, and low overhead clearance. My Hurricane in 12', 8" high, and occasionally "test" the Garmin by changing the height of my RV to something higher.....and it has always warned of over pass heights on my route. Quite often while in back country driving my jeep, I take the Garmin with me......if I forget to change it to "automobile" mode, I will give me some strange routings.....but quickly realize it's because it won't let me go down a road with a low bridge. Been very happy with this Garmin unit indeed!,

I think that person would have peeled their roof without any help from a GPS.

We use the Sygic app on a 7 inch tablet. All maps are offline and they have maps for Canada, USA and Mexico. We have used it for years and love it. For the "last mile" instructions to an actual address though, we have found nothing more accurate than Google Maps however it does require an internet connection.

That could very well be true, Bruce. Their biggest problem was that the OnStar system in their truck kept wanting to route them onto an east coast thruway that was supposed to be only for automobiles. Trying to get around otherwise, even with OnStar agents helping, got them in a downtown area.
They found the low clearance spot after a policeman and OnStar agreed on a way back to a route they could use. That's why I'd not trust a GPS that was in a vehicle, and only partially trust one that was for RV's/trucks and had clearance info. I still prefer the atlas though for sure.

I guess the best thing is to be very aware of your surroundings, drive with caution AND utilize ALL the tools you can to navigate safely.
It's when you loose concentration and start believing you're too good of a driver for that to happen to you that "bad" things can happen.
