Home Depot/Lowes has those crimp fittings in their stores and a standard wire crimper will work to connect everything back up, just use the insulated terminal section of your crimper.

I considered getting the crimp splices but figured I would wind up cutting more wire each time I replace the cheap lights they provide. This way I can just untwist the splice and install the new one. I agree, they need to be tight but if you get the correct size they should bind pretty well.
