Tires

Those of you who have gone to 18ply tires on your DRV which brand did you purchase and are you happy with them?

An I rated tire? I was thinking of switching to Continentals when I am ready to replace my tires. I believe the Goodyear tires are over $500 per tire plus installation.

Ryan, we were told retail price on the GYs are $425 a copy plus install. That was at a tire dealer in Marquette MI last September.

Whatever brand you consider, look at moving up to the 235 size tire--you will gain about 1200lbs/tire capacity, but still 125psi. Had great luck with Sailuns in 215 size, this time I went with Cooper RM170s in 235 size. The OEM GYs had 2 of 4 tread separations after about 2 years, same with Michelins on previous Suites. Too much money for not enough value, in my opinion, for the GY/Mich tires.

The rims are 6.5" wide, will accommodate the 235s.

Just passing on things I have learned from other DRV owners....

I got Cooper RM170s, $940 mounted, balanced, taxes, disposal fees. I feel Sailuns are just as good, but couldn't get them...check pricing at SimpleTire.com for comparisons.

My 18 ply

My 235 18ply tires are Michelin. I got them thru http://simpletire.com
They are a good company to deal with and I got them at a good price.

Make sure your wheels will handle them. Look at the Max Load stated on the back of the rim.

Enjoy.

The term "PLY" is not used like it was in the past. They go by "Load Range" now. Every tire of the same size and load range will carry the exact same amount.

Yes. Load ranges are assigned a letter which then translates into the number of plies. It is pretty simple to understand the conversion. You will see a pattern emerge. Examples below
E - 10 plies
F - 12 plies
G - 14 plies

You also have to keep in mind, the higher the rating, the stiffer the sidewall. To much tire will give you a harder less forgiving ride on bumpy roads. So it is a balancing act of getting the right tire to carry the load that you have but not so tough to beat the crap out of the rig while going down the road.

Being able to get replacements if needed on the road is pretty important.

While any tire brand can have a failure, GY and Mich are the only ones I have used that failed........Sailuns made it to AK and back, expect Coopers will also, and that is not an uncommon name as I drive by tire shops.
