New to forum

Hello All. I'm Jim from Long Island. My wife and I are recently retired and are planing on the purchase of a RV. On our last visit out west she stunned me by saying that she was ready to consider RVing. This had been a dream of mine my entire life but no so hers. She spent most of her time online looking at models. She was keying on a new class B+ but I knew after listening to her plans this was not going to work because of the size.

So instead of sight seeing we drove to a dealer. I went right for the Class B+ and showed it to her. As soon as she went in I knew she realized that it wouldn't do. Next was the Class A then C. The A was too large and the C didn't work either for various reasons. We then went from dealer to dealer checking models out. We found the Thor Vegas/Axis 27.7 which was perfect for our needs. Size, Storage, floor plan, Etc. Perfect for kidnapping the grand kids and doing daily, overnight or weekend trips. We inspected and test drove several of them and are now committed to it. I would have bought one out west but didn't want to make the cross country trip on the maiden voyage. Plus I resisted the Mortal Sin of RV impulse buying without doing massive research.

We have found a 2018 Unit with 300 miles on it at a good price. Still some negotiating room. After watching 500+ you tube videos and reading a library full of info I now turn to the veterans for help. Can I get some input on what people think. Don't be afraid to be negative. In fact that's what I'm looking for. One concern that I have is the tires even though there's only 300 miles on them, they have been sitting for awhile.

We are planning to take a trip to Ohio where it is for an inspection.

Thanks for the time to ramble and all of your help.

Jim

Congratulations on winning the rat race, and welcome to the Forum.
It's amazing when our "Best-Halves" can surprise us like this; keep her happy, and your whole World will be a much better place!
(But you already knew that anyway! )

Providing it's a brand new unit, the 300 miles were nothing but transport miles to get from the factory it to the dealership. The 2018 tires should be OK as it's in Ohio vs Florida or the desert out West. Search the forum(s) for PDI inspection processes and take your time (hours) doing them. Don't give them any money until you know everything is perfect. Make sure you drive it down the road a good distance at highway speeds and make sure you're OK with any noises such as wind noise, engine noise, and heat coming from motor, etc. Don't just drive around the block. All body configurations re different and there are specific sacrifices across each style. Good call...go buy one before she changes her mind!!!! Rule ONE...beware of the RV salesperson...most are not very familiar with what they sell and will tell you ANYTHING just to get in your pocket. Verify and research. Take your time...but hurry!!!

Welcome to the forum. No matter which model you choose, there will always be something that isn't right. My advice is to be thorough and take your time when looking it over or on your walk through. Check every door, drawer, trim piece, and make sure stove, fridge, ac, furnace, water, propane and everything else works before taking it home.

And even then expect a few bugs. It’s not uncommon to find things to fix so try not to get frustrated if it happens to you. Once you get the “new coach gremlins” under control you’ll get many years of good service. It helps if you are somewhat handy. And I hope the both of you enjoy your retirement and many years and miles of exploring.

Welcome "new" to forums myself, (an OLD RV'r.) Congrats on reaching the "golden age". (Whoever coined that phrase must have been a doctor as at this age the M.D.'s get all your gold!) I have been an RV owner of one sort or another since the mid 90's so as others have said check over whatever unit you decide on well and expect to have a few "bugs" to iron out. Helps if you are handy for minor fixes. I see you intend to travel a distance to possibly purchase? My experience says that could be a problem if you need warranty work. After you take it home your local (insert brand) independent dealer won't jump through much of a hoop to fix an issue on a rig they didn't sell. May not be a problem if you are purchasing from one of the nationwide dealers like General RV or Camping World they should service a unit they sell at any of their dealers. Good luck and see you at the campfire!

I agree with Gritz. Drive it down the freeway/highway, pay attention to how it feels when meeting a semi on a two lane. If it feels like you are getting blown around, negotiate an alignment into the deal. Our Class C handled MUCH better with an alignment. Do a dry run through a setup/breaking camp. Have them test that battery to be sure it's not a "dud". You get the idea. And, good luck!
