Thor axis 25.3/2016- noisy

Hi,
We are John & Pat Koval living in OC Calif. This is our third new motorhome (since 1973) purchased in Jan2016.
I'm a retired MSEE and an inveterate modifier/"jack of all trades". So the first year and half the unit sat in the driveway as I slowly made various modifications to the unit. Fishing wires was an especially tedious job.

We just finished our first use -- a 1-month trip up through Calif, Nevada, Utah and back. Except for noise level (impossible to enjoy some music while driving) and "uncalled for" down shifting we were quite pleased with the AXIS. Our previous MH was a Diesel pusher -much quieter and full gear control.

Look forward to any noise solutions. The first comment from THOR is no noise comments received - just wind noise leaks.

John

A quick browsing through this thread: http://www.thorforums.com/forums/f27...-3-go-820.html

There are quite a few of us who put fatmat inside the doghouse and under the hood to reduce noise.

This is the material I used to cover the inside of the dog house.
I installed it in aircraft for 40 years. It has made a great change in the noise level of the motorhome cockpit BUT that is sitting in the yard, no road test drive yet. Coming soon.

3M 4014 SOUND AND VIBRATION DAMPING PANELS

I will be installing the Fatmat under the floor in the near future and fully expect this to be a good thing.

Now I have a 2016 Thor chateau 31w, mind was super loud when driving to the point we almost got a headache. Driving between 59 and 64 miles per hour I would get a loud vibration while driving. I contacted MORryde who extends the frames for Thor. They paid for the drive shaft to get rebalance and to change the angle of the drive shaft. They paid about $4,000. When I drive the RV now I can actually talk on my phone through the the speaker system and it is a lot quieter.

With our 2016 Vegas, sound and heat from the doghouse doesn't seem to be an issue. The sound we are getting comes through the dash. Only occasionally do I think it might be worth my time and effort to add under dash insulation.

One trick that helps keep the roaring down is to kick the cruise off before the transmission makes that downshift. In some terrains, I don't use the cruise at all. I don't mind if the coach loses speed going up hill, but I do mind when it shifts down to that gear that makes that V10 scream. Of course, on long and/or steep hills it is going to that lower hills anyway.

That's my experience and opinion. Your results will vary!

Elvis, ever been to Graceland? I have many many many times. Heading there again in about 2 weeks. :-)

Oh, it took me 2 sheets of the 3M material I used 18" X 48" in size for the doghouse and area forward of the doghouse.

UPDATE: UPDATE:
I did my test drive yesterday afternoon. The wife and I drove around the neighborhood. That's a 40 mile drive. The noise level is SO GOOD I almost hate to talk about it. Seriously, it is so good. We can talk now from seat to seat without yelling at 65mph. I still plan to cover the cockpit floor underneath and that will make it even better. Not sure how far I will go with this but a little at a time and this ride will sound like a new Lincoln inside at 65mph. Well, except for all the shake rattle and roll of the coach. (GRIN)
