2018 Hurricane 31z

Anyone out there have a 2018 Hurricane 31z that has the 30 amp service? I'm looking to trade my Gemini 23tr on one. They have two of them in stock. One has 30 amp service with one a/c and the other one has 50 amp service with two a/c units. Not sure why they have this option. The 30 amp one has more body paint than the 50 amp one and that and the A/C's is the only difference. Other than price. My question is can one A/C keep up in hotter conditions?
Thanks

Interesting. We have 2 AC units with 50A service and it can get hot with both of them running. We have found the filters need to be cleaned pretty often or the air flow gets clogged up and stops cooling as efficiently. There is also a mod out there to add a vent directly to the bottom of the AC unit housing - it is basically one of the same circular vents that is ducted into the RV, just in the bottom of the AC unit itself.

As always, it really depends on where you are planning on camping. In moderate climates one AC unit may be just fine. In hot and humid climates, both ACs may not cool enough to sleep comfortably.

Not trying to be nosy, but what is the difference in price? Is that a factor?

With our 34 foot Mirmar we have the dual pane windows and (2) 12500 BTU ACs is just about right. We also use that reflective bubble mat in our front windows.

I could not see sitting here in 95-100 degrees outside supported by (1) AC.

If it gets hot, and you don't have that second air conditioner: you'll be happy to pay that difference, to get the 50 amp service, and the second unit...

I see that he lives in NC. I will say I will never buy a larger unit than my 28 without 2 units.... All I can give is personal advice.

I’m thinking the same about 1 ac unit. We do a majority of our traveling in fall - spring. But I don’t want to worry if we do go in hotter climates.

$6K seems to be a lot for just one additional A/C. There must be other options included or they realize you NEED 2 of them and just spiking the price as a result of it. Either way...more is better. You'll spend a lot more time in the coach that looking at the outside. Nothing is worse than a poorly ventilated, over-sized shoe box with inadequate A/C.

Always be prepared for the most extreme situations that you might encounter... not just the ones that you're likely to encounter...

I have a 27K and found that I can not travel when the temps are say 95 or above and no shade here in So Cal. One AC Just doesn't do it and that is low humidity. Part of the $6000 option is probably a larger generator. I would rather have had two AC's and not need both most of the time but have them if I need them.

Yup!
It's better to have them, and not need them: than need them, and not have them!

Didn't even consider the generator upgrade...you're right...plus the duct work and dual controllers. Go for two A/C's!! Just voted...it's unanimous. We alternate between both units but have used both together and summer isn't really here yet. I'm officiating my niece's wedding next weekend in Charleston/Folly Beach. Beach wedding...yuk...we'll have MH set up at the pavilion for Brides dressing room, cool down chambers for the older folks, etc. You can bet one A/C wouldn't do it there.

That is my thinking too Bob. We will have to see if CW can get their hearts in the right place. We love the Gemini but looking down the road for going bigger.

I would say it is worth it as you would have the second AC and the generator for 50A service. As stated before, better to have it and not need it plus it opens the options to where you can travel comfortably.

You can add me to the choir. My coach came with 30 amp service. It wasn't available until January 2016 on the 31 footers and below. With Reflectix in all the windows and in bright sum on a 101 degree day, 18 degrees was the temperature differential. Same coach with the Mach 15 up front and a Mach 3PS in the rear on a 98 degree day (with Reflectix only on the windshield) the temperature differential was 26 with thermostat set at 72 degrees. The EPS shows 16 amp draw for the Mach 15 and 12 amp draw for the Mach 3PS.

50 amp and dual air, definitely!!! You never know where you might end up, maybe a sunny spot with no shade. You get a bigger generator and more flexibility. Much easier to start with 50 amp and dual AC than trying to add it later!!! Even on a smaller coach, if it has dual AC available, that is what I would purchase. Can’t put a price on comfort in my opinion.

It has crossed my mind to consider a way to put in a 3rd air conditioner. I've seen Prevosts with 5 ACs on the top of theirs.

Interestingly I have the coach at front door while we're loading up for the 10 day trip starting this weekend. While underway, the F550 dash A/C keeps the entire coach cool as the overhead cab keeps sun off the windows and Ford is know for "ice cold air". Temps here yesterday were near 90, full sunshine. I only had one A/C going as it's plugged into 110V. It was reasonably comfortable and dehumidified inside the coach but not what i would call "sleeping cool". I can't imagine just one A/C as an option. In temperatures above 90 it would be miserable. There's not much difference in the interior space of the 31 vs. my 35. The $6K difference for the 2nd A/C would be pennies on the dollar going forward. I don't know why Thor would even consider placing just one A/C in any coach over 30 feet long.

Thanks for all the info and insight on this. If we do decide to trade I will definitely go with the two a/c unit.
