30 amp electric? Can we boost ?

With our surge protector on, we have experienced numerous electrical outages. We usually run one tv at a time, may have water heater on, and throw a light on now and then. Seems like it blows too often. Any suggestions on how to get more juice ?? We are a Thor Vegas 24.1 , 30 amp.

30 amps is plenty for that and more. Something else going on.

what do you mean by 'experiencing outages'? Do you mean your 'surge protector' is cutting out your electrical? Or that the power pedestal's breaker is tripping?

With what your usage you describe, it doesn't sound like an overuse of amperage, but more like your 'protector' is trying to 'protect' you.... crazy. I've not ever used any type of 'protector' for over 100,000 miles in every state and most all Canada provinces, with all types and kinds of electrical situations and scenarios and narry any problem...

secondarily, though, it's known that some campground breakers are just weak from overuse by so many RVrs plugging and unplugging and flipping on and off the breakers at the pedestal... this causes an 'oversensitive' breaker that can trip way too soon, making you 'think' you've done something wrong.

Remove your 'protector' and see if the same things happen.

if not, the 'protector' may be your issue.

if so, have the campground replace/change out your pedestal's breaker for a new one.

If you mean the gfci breaker on the bathroom electric Receptacle, it's a cheap fix.
You'll need a new receptacle and it needs to be from the mobile home industry and not from a stick built home.
A standard home unit is too deep for that cabinet.

I was told that the surge protector is a must .. my friends have 50 amp and use a surge protector too ... but rarely have a problem. Without a protector I was told we could have major problems with a surge... is this not true ?

I had a similar problem.
Does it matter if your couch slide is in or out?

Mine stumped everyone until I figured out the slide position vs shore power blowing.
Coach gfci wouldn't blow, coach breakers didn't break, surge protector didn't break, it was always shore power that failed.

Mine was dead short caused by the slide pulling a bare wire.
It worked fine always until the last half inch of putting the slide out, and sbore would blow.

If the slide was already out when plugging in to shore, shore would blow.

We would put the slide in and everything worked.

You got a picture of this special RV GFI outlet?
or a link to it?

This is a Thor Vegas 24.1 2014... I think protection is a good thing. Surge protector, water pressure gauge, etc

It's not special it's just mobile home standard fair.
Mobile home receptacles can be a different in that they are shallower to fit thinner walls and mount to the wall differently.
24.1 uses mobile home receptacles.

I put regular receptacles in my 24.1
Theres a write up in my ongoing thread.
Believe me, it's nothing you want to try.
It requires buying old construction boxes, slicing the back off of them and the enlarging the hole in your wall to fit.
I did it only so I could use receptacles with built in USB ports.

Just ask for the mobile home type.

As a master electrician I know all about the RV outlets and thin walls but I now nothing about an RV GFI please help me learn.

One other reply suggests what I am thinking. Is there a benefit to plugging into the 50 amp and use my 50 to 30 amp dog bone ?

I'm gonna say this just once and then I'm gonna sit back and watch. Find someone with an multi-meter that knows how to use it. Start at the shore power and measure the voltage. In your case you looking for 120 volt. Check EVERY connection back to the RV breaker panel in order. Every joint. Tighten every screw pull every wire. Measure and write down the voltages. Do not jump around. Do not go chasing gfi's. We will do that later. This is how an electrician trouble shoots. Start at the beginning and work to the end one step at a time.

I'm pretty sure based of what you have sad the somewhere there is a loose connection. If you want to find it follow my instructions other wise your on your own.

As a general rule no. Your main breaker will be a 30 amp so running more than that will generally trip the breaker even if you are plugged into 50 amp.

You already have the protection so I would continue to use it. As someone else said, campground electric components are often worn out and can trip. When it happens too often to me I ask the campground management if I can move to another site.

Ok we will be more conservative. But it kills me to see how much electric 50 amps can use, such as Christmas lights burning all night long! And we run a couple things and it trips.
