Battery strap

Tried to get one of the battery straps on house battery loosened to get tab up to check for water. The metal latch was corroded. Scraped it but can’t get latch which is on the side of battery to open up. Will spraying and soaking it with WD-40 help ?

Cut the strap. Use rubber bungees to restrap batteries down.

Or, instead of bungees, use a velcro strap to replace it with. I picked up a roll and just use that (cut to length).

You can buy tie down straps, non metallic at most auto parts stores.

I agree: they're easy to replace...
Cut them!

The first time I tried to remove the straps on mine to replace the batteries I was trying to pull the metal lever outwards. I though mine were jammed. I finally figured out they push in easy (Spring loaded). Try to push in with one finger and pull up on the strap to see if it slackens before you cut it off.

Yeah, mine got corroded too. Kept messing with it till it fell apart, so went to Walmart & got another. Many other places sell them and you can use rubber bungee cords and velcro too. Since one of the batteries was cracked it spilled fluid all over the compartment, so I had to clean it out, then to make sure it doesn't corrode out the floor for awhile, I cut a piece of plywood to put under the rear one. With the plywood added to the front one it pushes on the 100 breaker so it doesn't get one. Not a lot of room in there for work and the hydraulic motor for the slide is there too. Kinda hard to read the quantities for the batteries and the motor.

With four 6 volt in my battery tray they don't move but about an inch forward. I cured that with a 10-12" piece of 2x4. Keeps them from touching the 100 amp breaker.

Do you know if the strap threads through some slots or just wraps around battery and plate it sits on.
In other words am i going to have to take battery out to get a new strap installed ? PS thanks everyone for the feedback

Just up & over the batteries. Try to get the strap under as many cables as possible.

The straps have metal hooks at the bottom that fit into slots.

I had to tape one of mine in place because when I installed my oversized batteries the would move them out of the slots. Took me a few trys but it finally worked out.

They DO seem to need three hands, for proper installation...
I also used Duct-Tape; to hold mine in place!

Ok so doesn’t sound like WD-40 will help open the clasp. This thing is only 6 months old.

So I'm thinking (except for the autos that you have to take off a fender) why doesn't Thor just make a battery cap you can screw down with posts, like in the cars?

No, but you are going to have to hold the strap tight until the battery gets in the slot, then gets attached to the clamp. Some folks use velcro, some bungee cords, some zip ties to make the job easier somewhat.

Oh, those little Coleman camp stools? Just the right height for working there.

Long and Winding Road had it right. Once you figure out how to release the latch, it's not so hard. I was able to take mine off and put them back on.

Bungee cords don't last very long, especially when stretched, so I wouldn't use them for this job.
