Yeah, but you usually don’t have the item turned on and the amperage is usually very small. A similar example of the rv would be to turn an electric clothes dryer on high and then plug it into the outlet.

There are 2 considerations.
First
Are you going to damage the blades on the plug and socket? MAYBE. It depends on the current being drawn upon contact. In most cases the air conditioner is off. Other high current devices take a moment to startup after sensing AC power. Examples are the water heater or fridge. Most inverters will power up fast but the charger ramps up over several seconds. So in my opinion no damage will be done as long as you are aware of what the current load is.
Second
Switching power sources via relay may cause a spike or momentary outage. This can be damaging to some things. Most ek3ctrionic devices fail because the internal power supply breaks. For this reason alone all electronic stuff should he powered down during the power transfer.

Cut off the main breaker on the shore power. I’m sure that is what they mean.

You should always make sure the breaker is off before you plug in and when you unplug. There is always some load from your rig and you will get an arc at the plug when connecting and disconnecting.
If you plug into a burnt receptacle you will burn your plug, then next time you will arc and burn the receptacle at the new camp ground, it's a virus for sure.

We have a surge protector at the post..so when we plug in, it goes through its checks before a green light comes on...Green light=OK to plug in at Axis.
I understand what aaOri is saying...however, it would impossible for the surge protector to go through its checks without breaker on at the post...

Hooked up like this: it keeps the hose free of sediments...
Once your hose is fouled: you might as well use it for cleaning out the slinky...

Voltage test
All great ideas, don't forget to test the voltage. Low voltage can damage your RV as well.

Pardon my ignorance (you can move down my forum status if necessary), but I don't know what everyone is talking about in this thread. Where is the "main breaker"? What is a "pedestal". I just come home and plug into the outside outlet on our house. My Chateau 29G always seems to be ok electrically.

No need to apologize. There's probably fifteen other folks who won her about the same stuff: but are hesitant to ask...
The Pedestal is the spot where the RV Park has it's electrical hook-ups for each site. The Main Breaker is on the Pedestal, and is used to shut down the power supply.
Your status is safe...

Yup...here at home and on the pedestal away. Many just plug in their surge protector first, then the rest of the cable.

New RVer. What is the pedestal where this breaker is? Do you mean where the rv park pedestal?
So far I plug in shore power and then turn stuff on in the coach.
Is everyone saying to throw the main breaker on the panel in the coach?
Sorry for the simple question.

Best practice is to never plug the shore line into any active circuit where the current limit is over 20 amps, (doesn't matter if is a camp ground pedestal, house box or storage building). This ensures you don't electrocute yourself or cause a power surge into the coach. Plug the shore line into the coach first and then into the electrical receptacle. Lastly turn the circuit breaker on. If the plug does not have a circuit breaker, then you can turn off the biggest circuit breaker in the coach's power center (where the main circuit breakers and the 12 volt fuses are located). That will be a 30 amp breaker in most coaches with one air conditioner or twin 50 amp circuit breakers for coaches with 2 or more air conditioners. Best practice is to never plug in any receptacle with the A/Cs on.

Yes, we make sure that the breaker is off before we plug in AND when we leave!

No, not sure what you mean. I think you are thinking surge protector. If your coach is 50 amp, get the 50 amp protector. If you are at a 30 amp only campsite, use a 50 to 30 amp adapter. Progressive makes a good unit and has good warranty.

Yes..it's the hookup point at your park for power...probably have a cable connection there too along with plugs and breakers for 30 and 50 amp
