Surge protectors- yes or no?

I have read that getting a surge protector for my MH is a good idea. Do you have one? Did you go with the approx $100 or the more expensive $400 ones that have all the extra options? Thanks for any input!

Yes, I think it is an important to have a surge protector, especially here in Florida where we have so many lightning strikes. I bought my surge protector quite a few years ago and paid somewhere around $300. Others will surely give you good reviews on what is available today.

I would not go with out one. I have the Progressive Industries EMS 50amp one. Not only does it protect you on a surge, it
Product Features:
Over/Under Voltage Protection
Open Ground, Open Neutral & Reverse Polarity Detection
Accidental 240V Protection
Miswired Pedestal Indication
Surge Failure Indicator
Amperage Meter Display
Previous Error Code
A/C Frequency Protection
Time Delay (136 seconds)
Adjustable Time Delay
Thermally Protected
Remote Display w/Scrolling Digital Display
Field Serviceable
UL Certified and Canadian Approved
Lifetime Warranty

After twice of having power cut off because of low voltage, I also carry a Hugh’s Auto-former. This provides correct voltage so my different motors don’t over work and fail early.

Good information to have, thanks for the web links Rynosback. Guess I need to do some Googling. I have 30amp in my new (to us) 2013 THOR ACE 30.1 and thought all I really needed for electric were a few adapters. I just started seeing the info on the surge protectors and EMS. We are still in the getting new tires, alignment, etc., stage, so am trying to be proactive.

They make 30 amp versions of both.

We had the Progressive Industries 30 amp ems when staying in Florida in the winter. It would cut off the electric when the voltage got too low.
The park manager warned us that the electric system wasn't the greatest. I think it saved our air conditioner from an early death.
We wouldn't be without some kind of protection.

Buying a surge protector is like an insurance premium:

If nothing happens, you still have piece of mind.
If something does happen, you've possibly saved a lot of money & trouble.

Had never thought or knew about hard wiring the EMS, so now have another option. That is what getting input from others is all about... when i started out I didn't even know about getting a surge protector! Thanks Halfprice, Dick & Pat, jazzfest and Taylorbob1. Appreciate all your input.

Yes, surge protector is a good idea. Have never heard anyone regret that purchase. We went without for years and now use the plug in 30 amp unit on our Vegas.

No argument that the hardwire might be better, but having one to plug in is better than none. I use a locking bike cable for the illusion that it is secure from theft.

Why do you use both? Won't the Autoformer do both jobs?

I like that "illusion of protection from theft". If someone really wants something guess they will find a way to steal it, don't they? Most everything we do to prevent theft is like that.

surge protector

I never go out without my surge protector. I just returned to CA from Florida. Electrical storms across the USA on my return trip. It just takes one strike and you could be out thousands in damage. I went with the more expensive plug in unit. It takes less time to start up(somewhere around 12 seconds) and if a surge does get through it into my coach, the manufacturer will pay to repair/replace anything inside that was damaged. I just cable lock it to the electrical line from my coach and the electrical pole to prevent theft.

A wise man once told me that locks won’t stop a determined thief...

FWIW: We bought a surge protector as a last minute purchase just before our first big trip cross country last year in our new RV. On our third night camping, just outside Yellowstone, our Progressive Industries EMS-30 gave a “Reverse Polarity” error code and shut down power from the pedestal. As I understand it, reverse polarity can cause a “hot skin” condition where your RV can shock you, and may also damage appliances. Money well spent, in my opinion!

We have this same model. Wouldn't leave home without it.

I've got a surge protector hard-wired into my rig...

... But I wouldn't leave home without my Progressive Industries EMS as well!
