Fridge issue

On our first mini trip and found our fridge in check mode. It did it a couple of times at home when I was switching from shore power to generator and 12v. So I’m wondering if it was just the fact that there may have been some air in the lines. And the dealer never really checked it in gas mode. ( I hope) I got it in gas mode for awhile and the flame looks okay. But put it back in auto hopefully it will be okay. Anyone have a similar problem?

Getting the lines bled is usually the biggest problem that we face...
If your flame is looking good: Congratulations!

So...... put back in gas only mode due to it going into check again, it ran for awhile and when into check again. Looks like a dealer issue. Darn it, I hate to do that

Run your gas stove for a bit and watch that flame. Sometimes we have to do that to completely get the air out of the lines.

Found this information on another RV forum:

If it is getting the Check light in both AC and LP modes, then the problem is likely with the circuit board that controls the fridge OR it is shutting itself down because it detects that it is not cooling even though the unit is running. This is a safety precaution added in recent years, after some fires occurred in malfunctioning cooling units.

Low battery voltage could cause this problem - both AC and LP modes need 12v power to operate the fridge control circuit board.

I would suggest taking it to an RV repair shop.

We broke camp to head home, going off power. It seemed to switch to LP and run ok, then I get home and noticed it was in check again. Read elsewhere where someone came up with the idea to put the thin air conditioning filter over the vent door. Still allows it to breath, but buffers the wind from blowing it out. Hate to take it back to the dealing, afraid I’m going to get the run around. And they can’t find anything wrong. Yah know?

Picked up a sheet of thin a/c filter and duct taped to fridge vent cover. I’m thinking that will prevent the burner flame from getting blown out all the time. Taking a trip next week will let everyone know. Called Thor they said it shouldn’t be happening.Click image for larger version

I hope that your filter solves the problem!
We'll be waiting to hear the good news...

I've owned 5 different RVs with absorbtion fridges - none of them "blew out" when running down the road. The flame should be almost enclosed if installed properly.

Trip to California and back, fridge worked most of the time but had to reset twice as it went into check when on LP. Can’t get it into dealer as they are backed up for a few weeks, plus we leave on a big trip next week, going to check the flame myself and she how it looks, not much else to do but pack a couple of coolers for now. Hmmm?

When it went into check were you driving some high mountain passes?

the fridge does not like switching modes very often, it gets confused if you back and forth to much

Mike...another option is to keep fridge as full as possible and when on shore power or stationery, place some blue ice packs in the freezer. Transfer these over to fridge, next to critical items (beer and milk) and don't open it while underway. It will act the same as if you were packing a cooler. During rest stops and lunch breaks, turn her back on. Pack your daily needs in a cooler so you don't open it during day.

Why is it some people’s fridges work fine and others don’t? I ‘m hearing everything from, “Mine works fine everywhere on LP” to problems with it blowing out through the vent, to down draft issues, and even altitude (driving through the mountains) issues. RV fridges sure seem unreliable. I can’t even get my dealer to look at it before we leave on a long trip next week, so it looks like I’m going to rely on cooler and ice for my fridge till the dealer can fit me in. I’ve tried doing what I can, and the flame looks good, so who knows what’s up with it. Another alternative is to run it on generator while driving, but I don’t want to do that

Having the same issue with our new Dometic. Check light when on AC even though Dometic said it isn't supposed to do that. Off to a Dometic service center to have it checked.

If I had a gas/120v fridge with no onboard generator, I'd install an inverter big enough to run the fridge alone on 120v while underway. That would solve the gas issues and save LP. I saw a 5th wheel last year burn up on the side of the road due to the gas fridge being on and wind somehow accelerating the flame.

If you want to go that route you should get a 1000 watt MSW (no need for PSW for a resistive heating element) as the fridge pulls about 400 watts when the element is hot.
