Ginny exercise

How long do you generally run a generator when exercising it. I’ve read everything from 15 min to 2 hours. Appreciate your comments, thanks.

Enough to get it fully warmed-up.

I try to run mine at least an hour a month, put sometimes it is 30 minutes and others are an hour or more. I usually have the AC and water heater on.

I run mine monthly for an hour, primarily to keep it lubricated, burn out any moisture build up and keep the batteries charged. I was told by Cummins that it is not important to have a load on a gas generator as it is on a diesel. I usually watch TV and run a space heater during the hour. Probably as important as running the generator is using a stabilizer in the fuel to keep the small carburetor free of deposits.

I’ve been doing the hour thing under a load so guess I’m in the ballpark. Thanks again.

I run mine about every 3 weeks for 30-60 min. Most of the time with a load.

I find 30-45 minutes with a half load once a month is enough to lube things up and drive out the moisture. I use a space heater, the refrigerator, some lights and the TV for the load. More important than that is the stabilizer. If you fail to do that you're making an expensive mistake. The monthly ritual gives me a chance to do a little maintenance and to check for any leaks or 4 legged visitors. Mice, rats and squirrels love motor homes.

I normally run with no load for 5 minutes, then turn on AC. Run for 1 hour and cut off AC and continue to run with no load for 5 minutes before I turn off the generator. I believe the 5 minutes on each end gives the generator a chance to warm up and cool off before I turn off the generator. No science involved, just the way I do it. Also, I use Sea Foam at all oil changes.

What a great way to escape for a while...

15-20 minutes once a week, warm up the convection oven or run an electric heater to put a load on it (can't really run the A/C when its -10F out).

I usually run it along with the V-10 long enough so that the V-10 is up to operating temps. Thus in colder weather it runs longer than warm...
