Battery Opinion.. New or Used??

2017 Axis 24.1 on 2017 Chassis. I took Delivery Nov. 2016 1 Year/ 1 month old?? The battery was taken out by me today. I have never taken off cables for any reason any opinion? Posts look New or Used? Also any suggestion on a "VERY GOOD chassis BATTERY" Replacement?? Thank you!

It is a FoMoCo battery, so it probably was installed new when manufactured. Our Ford dealer sprayed ours with red anti-corrosion protection when we got our oil changed. As far as batteries go, I like Odyssey's. They recharge quick, have great cranking power and mine have lasted 5+ yrs. My experience has been you can buy an undersized battery because they rate them differently. I would start with a pc1200. They put out 1200 cranking amps for 5 seconds! This is just my opinion from my experience with them. Take it for what you want.

Corrosion is caused by normal gas venting from batteries when charging. I wouldn't replace the batteries yet unless they tested bad. In my opinion the best batteries on the market are East Penn. NAPA auto parts sells them. As for corrosion just buy some terminal spray from NAPA to prevent that from happening again. They also sell aerosol spray for cleaning terminals that works really good, just remove batteries before cleaning

Interstate batteries get mentioned a lot in here. They're as good a replacement, as any of the others.

Why are you looking at replacing your battery? It should last a lot longer. Unless it is failing, I would clean the terminals, spray with the battery goop and put it back in.

Were any cells low during biannual checks? Have you ever checked the cell levels? Doesn't look like a maintenance free battery is why I ask. If you have the battery out, that's a feat in itself so put a fresh battery back in, especially if the original one doesn't test 90% or better.

They get mentioned a lot because they're CHEAP! Don't get me wrong they're ok and I just got 2 6V from Costco because ... ding, ding, ding... they're cheap and have a damn good chance to last me past 5 years at >80% (if the levels are maintained). Even as a non-deep cycle starter battery they're still just mediocre quality.

and the cables could and should have been disconnected during coach construction, especially during wiring of gen/set and all that other electrical work

A bit off topic but I have come to believe that many, especially “younger” buyers, have been spoiled by maintenance free auto batteries . They simply don’t know that many batteries require regular-even frequent - topping up. Then they are surprised when they fail early. On my Freedom Elite I found that I had to add water about once a month if the machine was on shore power. Suggests to me that it was being overcharged but I never got around to addressing that possibility.

Not off topic but Great observation & reminder! One of my thoughts posting this was... maybe a Thor Employee has my coach battery in his truck And... I now have his old battery? No way of telling if this is original batt. that came with new Chassis? Swapping a battery from chassis state in yard would be extremely easy. I also grew up from 10 yrs old working in Auto & RV Dealerships. 60,000 mile batteries don't look this beat up. The battery is full and not cooked all levels were good, red ball is showing thru window. had on trickle 24 hrs nothing (out of unit in my heated garage). I will be replacing All 3 with Optimas. I do love this Forum Thanks all!

Agree with Pete’sMH. I too routinely top my batterys once a month. They go through a lot of rugged use. Charging an extreme heat will affect water levels. Low levels will take toll on your batteries

What would you suggest as the ideal coach batteries for the axis 24.1 without modifications or very little? I have not purchased the coach batteries yet. I do appreciate your recommendation on this !

I too struggled with what batteries would fit under that step! Not many good capacity deep cycle options for that space. FWIW... I had pretty much convinced myself that the only option was lithium for the usable capacity I wanted.

Basically there's like one size odyssey that has good capacity and would fit in my step space, it was AGM and a great battery however I could easily buy 3 new sets of FLA with similar capacity for the same price and there's zero chance the AGM would outlast even 2 sets unless I also replaced the converter. I'd recommend understanding the float voltage setting on your specific converter to see if it's "ok" for AGM.

All depends on what your quest in batteries is?

I went for two 6 volt AGM LifeTime brand batteries, turned them on their sides to fit in the step.
