Mirror Sideswiped
So I’m driving through Phoenix on I 10. I am passing a truck and our mirrors sideswipe each other. I’m 98% sure I was staying in my lane. The accident knocked off the convex portion of the mirror. I had to stop to fix the mirror and put the convex one back on. The truck didn’t stop. So trying to reinstall the mirror I broke the darn thing.
Does this sort of thing happen often?
This is only our fourth trip in the rv and there has been some kind of problem each time.

Often? No. But my RH mirror did kiss a truck mirror one time as I was approaching a stop light with him stopped in the RH lane and me crawling in the middle lane. I was too far to the right. The mirrors touched but no damage.

Sorry to hear that you "got too close".
These happenings are rare; but they can be used to remind us that we're wider than we realize.
Please count it as a learning experience, and be thankful that it wasn't any worse.

One thing is certain and that is when you are in your lane with the rear wheels a inch or two from the lane stripe your mirror is across the line. Class A is the worst because most mirrors are on fixed arms. Be careful of awnings and slide toppers as well because they can also be in other lane and usually they are not visible in the mirror.

I wonder how many of us just take the Manufacturer's listed width as gospel, and never actually measure mirror our rigs:-tip, to mirror-tip?

We can't explain what happened but we can ask what the other problems were and use that information to maybe help you adjust your driving style.
I've never measured width. If builder says 88" and it's really 101" I will only care if I know the garage door width in advance. I can guarantee the coach is under legal width and that 10,000,000 people do just fine with max width vehicles. If I'm one of the 5 out of 10,000,000 with a problem, I should be off the road.

"legal width": exactly what does that mean?
and more importantly: where is it measured?

102 inches in the maximum legal width, measured from the outside edges of the "hard body" but mirrors do not count. One of the problems are the goobers with the sliding mirrors on pickups extending them as far out as they will go, even though they are not towing anything. It's a "macho-macho-redneck-man" thing. The mirrors on my GMC will extend that way and so will the ones on my MH chassis..but, I've never extended them once simply because of the issues with the OP.

Well,
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...Ut7rA5mH4SSyOv
Here you go.
There are indeed maximum widths for mirrors in some places. I'm not using this as a biblical proof. I'm using it to show what the true fact MIGHT be.
Either way, mirrors aren't regulated or they are:
It's a fluke or it is the driver. Either driver, either fluke, but I'd like to read the other problems encountered by the op.
I honestly often worry about mirror contact and am surprised it's not a daily event on any stretch of two lane road.

WOW...the max in every state is 102" except Massachusetts...there it's 108" plus awnings are excluded. So, we can leave our awning out while we drive and save that extra 1 minute during setup at our next destination. How convenient!

Some of it's pretty weird in that chart. It's what happens when lawmakers, contrary to what we believe they do best, try to economize on words.
Laws and statutes often need referenced to rules. The state rule might address a total maximum width or something about obstructing traffic.
Off topic.
Arizona has a very cool law called:
Impaired to the slightest degree.
I think it's brilliant.

Other issues are mostly self induced.
First trip we bashed an interior cabinet door.
Second trip the kitchen drain hose came undone.
Somewhere we got a rock chip and the windshield is cracked.
Slide wouldn’t close. I wasn’t holding the switch long enough.
Now mirror gate.

I've lost two mirrors, first one on the 210 fwy in California while stopped in traffic and a car carrier removed the passenger side mirror while he was driving on the shoulder. Of course he kept going. The second time was on the I-10 someone towing a travel trailer cut over before he was past me and took out the driver side mirror. He didn't stop either. Fortunately no body damage either time but I was out $500 each time to replace the mirrors.

Today I can add leaking passenger side window, and slide is jammed. I can push and pull one side of the slide to make it work. I can’t get the slide motors to sinc. I caused the problem by not taking out the slide lock, however still another problem.
It’s like something goes wrong every trip.
