Oil change

We are changing the oil in our 2017 Thor Ace 29.4 with a Ford V10 engine. Any advice on best oil and how much?

7 quarts of 5w30 blended or full synthetic.

Walmart has everything you need for a Ford branded oil change. They carry Motorcraft branded filters and oil. Last time I did my old coach, cost was under 30 bucks.

Just curious when I hear this question get asked time and time again.... how do you answer this question with your non-RV vehicle in the house?

The owner's manual calls for 7 quarts of 5-30 weight oil in the F53 6.8 ltr V10. The manual also calls for a synthetic blend, however, your warranty will not be jeopardized by using an approved API full synthetic. I would not do all I could to get the cheapest oil change for what the investment in your RV costs you. Hope that helps.

I’ve not done it on a ACE but since it’s on an F53 chassis be aware that some genius at Ford positioned the oil drain in just the right position to drain on to the front crossmember and run all over everything. The first time I did it I made a mess like I’ve not done since my first oil change in junior high school! You CAN do it neatly if you are careful. FWIW I use Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 filter.

If you’re doing the oil change yourself the first time is the worst. Have a funnel to direct the oil in to the oil pan. Use a 32 or 44oz styrofoam cup to remove the oil filter after you have loosened it slightly, cup catches drips and protects your hands from hot oil and filter.

Buy a Fomoto drain valve with the nipple to replace the stock drain plug, a short piece of plastic hose can be used in the future to direct the oil to the pan. Been installing Fomoto valves on all my vehicles for years and love them!!!

X2 on the Fumoto valve. My first oil change on the ACE was not a pretty sight at all. I was smart enough to have the Fumoto on hand now oil changes are a piece of cake.

Read owners manual on your Ford engine for the type and weight of oil.

I have been told by a representative of a German oil manufacturer that there are no strict specifications for blended synthetic oil in the USA. He represents only oil additives so doesn’t “have a dog in the fight”. An oil company could put one capful of synthetic in a guard of oil or in 500 gallons he stats. His recommendation is pay the extra $$ for Full Synthetic. In independent testing Mobil One and Amsoil tested best overall. Another bit of info. Motor craft branded product does NOT mean it was Original Equipment on Ford. That is Fords private label. The saying goes. Buyer beware. If it’s inexpensive there is a reason.

Fully agree with your statement. I always wonder if someone out there bought a $100k "non-rv or touring sedan, etc." would they opt for the cheapest oil change even though we are talking about a minimal difference in cost when looking at the bigger picture. Walmart sells five quart jugs of Mobil 1 for around $27 and a good K&N filter on Amazon costs around $9. Worth the extra money even if you give the oil and filter to your non-Jiffy Lube mechanic for the oil change.

I use the Motorcraft oil from Walmart along with Motorcraft filter on the Vegas. I also do not routinely go full 5000 miles between changes. I will got to almost 5000 if unit is on long trip.

I drag race, build my own engines, transmissions and rear axle setups. I am not fond of using full synthetic oils in most engines based on what I see on rings/cylinder wall finish. I have also seen on GM LS style motors a big increase in oil consumption when full running synthetic oils at higher miles. My current 07 SUV has 145,000 and I use Castrol GTX 5-30W conventional. Consumption is 1 quart every 2,000 miles.

In my commuter car I do use Mobil1 0-20W and a good filter.

In all the years, I have yet to see a real, genuine oil related failure.

We put six quarts of MOBIL 1 in ours, as I read that it actually takes 6.5 quarts with filter replacement and I didn't want to overfill.

The six quarts put the dip stick at 1/2 between the ADD and FULL... (even after a long trip)

And X3 or 4 on the FOMOTO...

Sure better than 184.00 at the dealers for oil change with who knows what type of oil.

I would suggest Mobil 1 sythethic 5-30. Great oil and you can easily run it for 7500 Miles if needed. I normally will go 5000 miles between changes.
